A "twinkler" was a ring which could get you shot dead in the early oilfield days. It was a highly polished gold ring, flat on one side, worn on the left index finger. A good card cheat would use this (when acting as dealer) to read the cards dealt with the right hand by the reflection of the bottom of the card off of the highly polished ring.

Interesting tidbit, Tex. But I have to ask: Why is this posted in the literature section? My guess is that he meant it for Word of The Day, but when he posted, he was too drunk to find the thread.
