Preface
Zane Patrick's Day came about as a result of my favorite TV show, "Three Sheets". Now, if you've never heard of "Three Sheets" before, don't feel bad, because I'm sure most people haven't. "Three Sheets" is a TV show that's basically a worldwide pub crawl; what Tony Bourdain's "No Reservations" is to food, Zane Lamprey's "Three Sheets" is to alcohol. In each episode, he goes from country to country (or, within the U.S., state to state) visiting different lands to learn about their drinking customs, various specialty wines/spirits and to educate viewers on the variety of adult beverages around the globe.
"Three Sheets" began airing on the Mojo Channel in 2006; Mojo was an all-high definition content channel that was formed by a consortium of cable TV service providers (so, if you didn't have a high definition TV with cable -- or, if you *did* have a high definition TV but used satellite -- you were likely S.O.L. and couldn't subscribe to the channel. Sucks to be you). They originated this channel in order to promote high definition TV content to their subscribers. On December 1, 2008, the Mojo channel went off the air because the cable TV providers decided that at that point, there were enough high definition cable TV channels on the air and Mojo had served its purpose. As a result of this, many of their great TV shows suddenly found themselves without a home -- including and especially their most popular show, "Three Sheets".
In order to promote the show and attempt to acquire a new TV channel as its home, host Zane Lamprey decided to conduct what he called a Zane Crawl -- pub crawls around the country where he would continue to meet with fans and hope to gain enough interest in the show to be able to sell it to another channel (preferably, one that is in high definition).
One such Zane Crawl was called Zane Patrick's Day -- Zane Lamprey's "Three Sheets" version of a St. Patrick's Day party held here in NYC on Saturday afternoon, March 14, 2009 at The Knitting Factory -- a nightclub in the upscale Manhattan neighborhood of TriBeCa (how upscale? JFK Jr. used to live there. Until he died. Then he stopped living there. Because he was dead and didn't need a place to live any longer).
I was lucky enough to be able to attend this party and meet Zane to not only celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but also, to learn of the future of "Three Sheets" on TV.

After an initial introduction by Zane Lamprey (which featured a sneak preview of an episode of season 4 from "Three Sheets"), Zane Patrick's Day included a performance by the Irish band Jameson's Revenge. They played not only traditional Irish songs, but also, well-known popular songs (like Paul Simon's "Call Me Al") played with a distinct Irish flavor. The crowd seemed to love it and many started dancing, despite the jammed dance floor.

Following the set by Jameson's Revenge, Zane Lamprey took the stage again, where he told jokes, answered questions from fans and (with the help of others) recited obscene Irish limericks. Quite understandably, you might be wondering about the monkey clipped to the right side of his belt. The monkey's name is Pleepleus and it serves as the show's mascot. Where the name Pleeplus came from, I don't know, but how the monkey came to be the show's mascot, I *can* share with you: When Zane first landed the job as host of "Three Sheets", his wife purchased the doll and secretively packed it in his suitcase before his first trip to shoot an episode. It included a note that said she was giving him the monkey as a way of telling him that no matter where he traveled, she would be thinking of him. As a result of this, Zane made sure the monkey appeared in every episode of the TV show as a way of reminding his wife that he was thinking of her, too, while he was away. The monkey Pleepleus has appeared in nearly every episode of the series' three seasons.

Joining Zane on stage was his college drinking buddy Steve McKenna. Don't be confused by the green Harpo Marx wig -- that was just for the event. Steve has short dark brown hair and is usually quite inebriated. In fact, shortly after this photo was taken, he stripped down and did a stage dive into the audience where he was passed around by the crowd and eventually returned to the stage, where he conducted beer chugging contests with a number of folks. What does it mean to be Steve McKenna? Perhaps this t-shirt says it all ...

At various points during the show, Zane came into the crowd to mingle (and drink) with his fans ... Later, he patiently posed for photos with many folks ...

While the party was fun, it was way too crowded -- I wish they could've held it in a larger venue, but I guess they were afraid they wouldn't sell enough tickets. The Knitting Factory holds about 600 safely, but they oversold the event with 650 tickets purchased online from Zane's Web site. Although accounting for a certain number of no-shows, the promoters also sold tickets to a small group the day of the event. They had an open bar from 2PM to 7PM, but since it was so crowded, I only managed to get a couple of drinks. No matter -- just being there in this festive environment alone was plenty of fun. As you might expect, however, some people got pretty wasted and being a big target myself (6'3" and 220 lbs.), I wound up getting pushed around by both men *and* women quite frequently when I inadvertently blocked their view of the stage. One of the reasons I wanted to attend this event was to learn of the new TV home for "Three Sheets", which Zane said he would announce at the party. Unfortunately, he did not because of the contractual agreement he has with the channel; he said they would make the announcement themselves soon. Rumors abound that it will eventually wind up on HDNet, but they are so far unconfirmed. If "Three Sheets" sounds like it might be a show of interest to you, you can catch portions of episodes on YouTube if you search by the title "Three Sheets". Alternatively, if you want to see entire episodes, you can catch them on Hulu ... Highlights include the following ... - Season 1: Jamaica (not just Red Stripe & Appleton Rum, mon!), Ireland (just in time for St. Patty's Day!) and Champagne, France (guess what he's sampling there!)
- Season 2: The Philippines (what better way to wash down your balut than with Lambanog?), Munich, Germany (Happy Oktoberfest!) and Kentucky (where he not only samples bourbon, but also, we see Steve McKenna on the show for the first time!)
- Season 3: Chile (learn the wonders of Pisco!), Las Vegas (flair bar tending and Zane-tinis for all!) and Scotland (where he not only samples a wide variety of Scotches, but also, tries Haggis!)
Zane has already announced two more Zane Crawls for this year: Zane-o De Mayo (Cinco de Mayo) in Los Angeles and Zane-toberfest (Oktoberfest in an as-yet undisclosed locale). Not sure if I'll be able to make either of those, so I'm glad I attended this one. Zane & his crew have already shot 18 episodes for season 4 of "Three Sheets", wherever it may wind up. I don't know where its new home will be, but I'll be sure to keep my eyes and ears open for its debut. The show is fun, funny and believe it or not, you actually wind up learning quite a bit.

I'm glad you went, I love hearing about different NYC venues. How's your head? Did you just get up? No, I didn't just get up. The party lasted until 7PM last night, at which point many folks went out to enjoy the rest of the evening on their own. As for me, I had a Bonus Screening scheduled with my movie class this morning (already posted the review), so I knew I needed to get to bed early in order to be able to get to the screening on time.

If this event is based on St Patrick's day somebody needs to tell the dude on the right that his football shirt may be an appropriate green colour, but it's a Celtic away shirt... a SCOTTISH football team... not Irish. Simon

The Jamaican episode of this show put me in Hedo mode. We rarely venture off grounds but now I want to see at least Appleton Estates. If you folks can dedicate 25 minutes or so, watch this, I think you'll all enjoy it. www.hulu.com/watch/12721/three-sheets-jamaica#x-0,vepisode,1 Thanks for the recommendation BB. The next time I'm in Jamaica I'll ask for J.B. (I have to at least try it) You know, with the small collection of liquors I have, my favorite is to sip some Appleton and after viewing this show, I want to book my next trip.

I found that one they mentioned -- J.B. -- to be something of a surprise. In the 20 years I've been traveling to Jamaica, I'd never heard of that one until the episode of that TV show.
