We were working out at the gym last night and my wife came by the pool where I was swimming and told me she was driving home and would see me in a bit. When I left half an hour later, there were two voicemails from her on my phone. The first one was traffic noises and a crash, then the phone went dead. The second a few minutes later was my wife balling uncontrollably. I didn't know whether she had been in an accident or what. I finally reached her and she told me that our Boston Terrier Piglet had run into the highway and been hit by a car. The sound I had heard first was her calling to tell me that she couldn't find the dog and I actually heard him being hit.
When I got home, she was sitting in the driveway covered with blood holding the dead dog. His head had been mashed and all of the skin ripped off one side. At least it looked like he did not suffer. All three of our dogs sleep with us and my wife bathed them twice a week and doted on them. The other two dogs are older and more settled but this dog still had a lot of puppy in him and the house seems too quiet without him. It is tough to lose a dog but my wife feels guilty that she did not watch him well enough. We buried the dog last night.
Everyone who owns a dog goes through this but it is not pleasant. Shit happens.

Sorry to hear this Tex, its bad enough when you go through the pain of planning to have a pet put down, but to have one hit by a car, and right in front of your wife... thats bad!

My condolences, Tex. The poor pooch may have had a short life, but it was full of love.

My condolences too Tex. I can be like losing a family member sometimes. "Pill-head Patty" ran over my dog of 12 years some time back. As you say - shit happens.

So sorry to hear this Tex, and how horrible for your wife. She shouldn't feel guilty though, dogs will be dogs and you can't watch them like a hawk.

The topic says it all. Your loss is truly felt by all. Mrs. Nola is a firm believer in the Rainbow Bridge (not the one over the Neches) and that many of us have a lot of four legged friends waiting eagerly for us.

so sorry to hear of your loss Tex, it is like loosing a member of the family. My son took "his" dog to live with him when he purchased a house (could not keep him in the apartment) & I was the one that had to take the other 2 to be put down in a short period of time due to age & illness I just can't go through it again so we remain petless. I will continue to spoil my childrens dogs when they come visit. I miss having them around.

Sorry to hear about this, Tex. It's tough losing a pet like that. I posted awhile back about having to put down my 14 year old Dachsie. She had been with me through thick and thin, getting divorced from the Witch, moving to another state . . .
Give it some time and when you're both ready, get another. We just got a puppy a month or so ago and she is already part of the family. Something about those pups licking your face . . .

Tex,
I'm so sorry to hear about this - how awful for you and your wife - big hugs to you both! I know how hard it is to lose a pet - they take a part of our hearts with them when they go. Jake got hit by a car (SUV) as a puppy - fortunately, he was young and BIG - it collapsed his lung and did other damage too but he pulled through it - it was one of the driving forces behind moving out of that house and into one that had much less traffic around it - we also have a 6 foot fence in our backyard so they don't get out. If he'd been killed at that point I would have been beside myself - my heart really goes out to your wife - I just can't imagine!
Hugs again,
Colleen
