Saturday was Sue's birthday, so as we were both without our respective children for the weekend we decided to go away somewhere. We settled on Brighton on England's south coast, about a 1.5 hour drive from where I live. We got a great rate at the MyHotel, Brighton's newest and most chic boutique hotel, from lastminute.com, so off we went.
However, unbeknownst to my sat nav they recently changed Brighton's one-way system, so we spent an hour driving round in circles once we hit the city, but eventually we found the hotel, checked in and went up to our room. All the rooms in the MyHotel are painted in stark white, everything is rounded so there are no corners, ambient lighting is provided by a lamp in a small alcove... this ch-ch-changes colour every thirty seconds or so, and the rooms have all been given the feng shiu treatment and even include a large crystal. The only feature I didn't like was that he bathroom was designed as part of the room, and within that was the toilet which was afforded little privacy as it was behind a frosted glass door. To compensate for that though the bed as amazingly comfortable and the room featured a socket to plug your iPod into the inbuilt entertainment system.
The hotel is in the The Lanes, the cultural quarter of Brighton which is a retail, leisure and residential area near the seafront, characterised by narrow alleyways following the street pattern of the original fishing village. The Lanes contain predominantly clothing stores, jewellers, antique shops, cafés, independent and avant-garde shops, theatres, restaurants and pubs. So after settling in we set off to explore, enjoying the great vibe of the Lanes before eventually finding our way to the seafront.
Brighton has a handful of famous residents, DJ Norman Cooke 'Fatboy Slim' and his wife TV and radio presenter Zoe Ball, glamour model Jordan, and former WBO Middleweight and Super Middleweight boxer Chris Eubankm who is a big celebrity here. All play a big part and raising the profile of the city, and I joked all weekend about my disappointment at not running into any of them while we were out and about. Well lo and behold, just before we set off for home late on Sunday afternoon we called into the hotel's restaurant for an ice cream and there, larger than life, was Chris Eubank chatting with the guests and staff. It made my weekend.
A couple of familiar names at the local theatre
One of Brighton's more unusual shops.
A tribute to the great British music hall comic Max Miller.
Street buskers.
Along the steps down to the seafront.
The seafront.
All that remains of the old West Pier which was destroyed by fire in 2003.
The see-thru loo.
