Oh please... Its the middle of January, the Weather Entertainment Channel is out of Atlanta, they freek when the temps hit +20. We get this every year and, perhaps excepting those who have just moved here, we are prepared for this.
Edited: It is good for their ratings however. I know the schools have not closed or anything like that, although they may limit outside recess to 20-30 minutes

Friday the high won't make it out of the 30's and the low will be 14. Fortunately without a reinforcing cold front this is only a two day situation and it will be in the mid 50's by Saturday but today it still sucks big time. According to the weather guessers this is the coldest air in 6 years to make it to Alabama, you guys up north can keep it all for your selfs if you like it so much.

Its been +2 to -7 for three days now, but we will get a heat wave for the weekend, all the way up into the high teens or maybe even the low 20's. That will make it pretty balmy for doing the necessary outside work, cleaning up all the snow off the driveway

The only good thing about cold weather down here is maybe it'll make a dent in the insect population, preferably the flea and tick population but I doubt it. Only two nights of cold air won't do it.

Before this week is out I'd be willing to bet we hear about power outages in the middle of the night.

Why? Its too cold for ice buildup As the temps drop people will be turning up their thermostats and in areas of the country where cold air like this is rare there usually a power outage due to demands.

Your thinking in air conditioning terms. Most heating isnt electric
Edited: Or is it down there?
Edited again: I am burning some LP right now. The wood stove cant quite keep up, I get the fire place in the living room going for a couple hours in the evening, that really warms the place up. But the furnace will cycle about 5 or 6 times overnight to keep it at 68

When I got up this morning, it was -3 outside. If we're lucky, it might get up to zero before starting to plunge again.
My brief walk to the Subway for a Five Dalla Foot Long yesterday nearly did me in! Unfortunately, I ate all of it, and will probably need to brave the cold again today if I want to eat. At least I have plenty of coffee and booze in the larder; I try to keep the essentials on hand.....Jake

There are gas companies and LP companies who supply power but most are electric. We have two heat pumps.

I have been getting the weather reports from friends and family...such troopers they are!

Joe You know, if you keep this up Joe, I'm gonna have zero sympathy for you when you are crying about having to heat your grapes. Same goes for you Southeast people and the hurricanes that are heading your way this summer. Zilla (who is pleased the area I am currently living in is very mild, but has lived in inhospitable places before and remembers what it is like when southerners try to brag about their balmy winters)

It's a good day to sit at home burning a fattie listening to reggae.
pssssst.... It's colder than a Wells' diggers ass in the Klondike. I have no interest in going outside today. Had enough of winter yesterday to fill the season. Snow blower petered out and took me six hours to dig out. Sienna and I are going to see Gran Torino tonight. (already having second thoughts there)

If you total up the cold days and we have 6 weeks worth then we've had a standard winter. I still hate cold weather. Weather wise our Winter weather is about the only thing we can brag about. We do have hurricanes from June to November and due to the humidity our summers are brutal. Like everyone else Spring and Fall are really nice.

Land yachts like those are the preferred vehicle around here for blasting through snow drifts without worrying about damaging a valuable vehicle.

Have computer, will make tiny dollars. ...you know, Diva, we kinda have similar guys...they cook, they fix things, and they have cute butts! And did I mention how good they are to us? Grin!

Right now it's 4 degrees and even though the thermostat is on 70 (and it is 70) there is a chill when you walk by an exterior wall or go by a window.
