Jack Kemp Battles Cancer
For many years, Jack Kemp and Edward Rutkowski remained very close. Teammates on the Buffalo Bills, and Rutkowski was county executive during some of the years Kemp served as congressman for the 38th district. Rutkowski has spoken to Kemp since the diagnosis, and says he is very upbeat.
"You get in the huddle and if it was third and twenty five we will get the first down, don't worry about it and he will end up throwing a 94 year touchdown pass. So he is used to being in tough situations and coming out of them, and he will do fine," said Rutkowski.
Kemp made a name for himself here in Buffalo, first as a quarterback, and then as congressman from the 38th district in Hamburg, where he served from 1971-1989. But Kemp became well known on a national scale when he was the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, before becoming Bob Dole's running mate on the republican presidential ticket in 1996. They spoke last night after the diagnosis, and Senator Dole says Kemp is upbeat.
"He is fuller than fuller than life if that is possible, and he always has about 95 things going on. Whether it is being on a TV show running a business or being on an advisory board," said Dole.
His friends inside and outside of Washington, where he still works are thinking of him today. Friends like former Congressman Jack Quinn, who represented Hamburg like Kemp did. He talked about how Kemp was one of the first people who helped him when he entered the public arena, and added "I know he believes in himself and his family so he will be a fighter in this disease as well as everybody else we have ever known."
Those who know him saying Kemp had been having trouble with his hip, that led to the diagnosis. His office saying kemp is undergoing tests to determine the origin of the disease and options for treatment. Russ Gugino, a longtime friend who ran his buffalo office for 8 years, echoes what many are saying today after finding out the news.
"He has got a lot of fighting ahead of him. Jack Kemp will and is an insitution in Western New York and in this country," said Gugino.
