A year or so ago, a Polish artist donated a sculpture grouping to the city of Chicago. It is called "Agora," which means, "gathering" or something like that. It was installed at the south end of Grant Park, and consists of 106 headless, armless torsos, stationary, but arranged as if wandering at random. I finally got around to visiting them today. I don't know if my photos do them justice, but they are quite eerie to behold, especially against the urban backdrop. Since they have no faces, they offer no preconceived notions of who they might be or what they might be thinking; it is completely up to the observer to fill in the blanks. You could see yourself, a loved one, or complete strangers. I'll probably continue to play with these photos in the future; I think they would look good as monochromatic images. For now, they are unaltered (except for my possibly presumptuous captions). See what you think. Solitary figure. The Mummy. Out of step. Scattered. Crowds at rush hour. Don't tread on me. Close-knit group. Against the skyline.

Cool pics Jake, and as you say, quite an eerie sight. You say there are 106 of them, is there just the one large group of them (as per the bottom pic which doesn't look like 106 figures) with others scattered around, or are they in various groups?

Simon: they seem to be pretty much randomly scattered over a long "string" about one city block long. At various parts of the "string" they are loosely packed or densely packed, some parts are wide and some parts are single file, with a few stragglers standing off to the side. Kind or reminds me of stars in the Milky Way stretching across the sky. It's so random that there must have been considerable thought behind it!......Jake
P.S. - if you go to Google Maps and enter:
1200 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, Cook, Illinois 60605, United States
you'll be taken right to Michigan and Roosevelt. Zoom in and you'll see the overhead view...

It's so random that there must have been considerable thought behind it! I know what you mean... random often takes an enormous amount of planning and contriving. Simon

It would seem that they also shaved "down there" a little to closely, too.

If that's the case, they should all use arch supports -- every single one of them appears to suffer from a bad case of flat feet.
