I got caught speeding on the NYS Thruway 2 weeks ago. I was in a rural area with no cars nor much civilization around me for that matter. It was an expensive ticket, $385.
I'll be watching my speed in the future, that's for sure.

Yikes, Gary!!!! That is a very expensive ticket. Just curious...how fast were you going and what was the posted limit? Was it over the maximum speed limit for NY? Inquiring minds want to know...

Speeding -- Minimum fine / Maximum fine / Possible prison time (15 days)
1) up to 10 mph over $90 to $150
2) more than 10 mph over - less than 30 mph over $180 to $300
3) more than 30 mph over - $360 to $600
I got the maximum of $300 plus the state surcharge of $85.
I was going 88 mph in a 65 zone.
I should have pleaded not guilty and had it knocked down by an attorney. I found out after I pleaded, an attorney can represent me without my presence. The court is 3 hours and 45 minutes away so I was reluctant.

Getting to the drug store before they close to pick up the condoms with the vibrating rings - PRICELESS!
-- BB (who would've chosen the 15 day prison term just so I could have the opportunity to catch up with a bunch of old friends)

I'd rather do the jail time than pay the fine. With good behavior I'd be out in 5 days and besides, the fall foliage is beautiful this time of year, presuming I get an outside detail.

Many years ago I got a ticket for "parking" in a handicapped spot. Now some might think that was OK for me, but the cop didn't.
It was a Sunday and the then witch I was married to had to go into this store at the very front of the mall to pick up an order. There were no parking places for miles around, except 8 handicapped spots right in front of the store.
I pulled into one, left the car running while I sat in and the witch ran in, got her stuff, and was back outside in about 45 seconds. I kid you not!
In those few seconds, a cop pulled up behind me, took one look at me and said, "you don't look handicapped to me!" and wrote me a ticket.
Pissed me off to no end, since NONE of the other 7 spots were taken, my engine was still running and I had no intention of getting out of the car.
I demanded a trial, which I could do, to resolve the ticket. It would have been a trial by judge only, not jury. I went to the local law library and looked up a bunch of stuff that suggested I really wasn't even parked by the legal definition. Someone told me to make sure and postpone the trial date a couple of times (it was during my medical training so I claimed I was having to work, which I was for at least one of those dates!).
The day of the trial came, and I rehearsed what I was going to say to the judge several times, going over my "evidence" and the law from the books I read.
The judge called my name and I quickly approached, but the police officer wasn't there.
Case dismissed. All "charges" against me were dropped.
I was pissed off again, as I had spent several hours researching this crap, only to have the judge throw it all out without me being able to plead my case. DAMMIT, I WANTED to plead my case!!
Sometimes it's best just to keep your mouth shut and take what the judge gives 'ya!! ;D

Plus, there is nothing guaranteeing that the judge would have reduced the charges, so you probably did the right thing. If you can go to traffic school, at least that will keep it off your record and keep your insurance costs down. (If NY laws are the same as CA laws)
