I went to see Melissa Etheridge last night in Montreal. It was an amazing concert. She sang for almost 3 hours straight (oops, bad choice of words!). She has so much passion and raw emotion in her voice, she kept the crowd on its feet for the whole concert. Her energy was infectious and her band was at the top of its game as well. It was a good ole fashioned rock concert and she played to the converted.
Her new album is very introspective and spiritual, reflecting her battle with breast cancer a few years back and the impact it had on her perspective on things. I think it is one of her best albums ever and I played it all the way home, singing at the top of my lungs!
There were lots of gay women in the crowd and it made me think about how having a ready made audience affects someone’s career. I’m sure Melissa Etheridge is happy to have such a large gay fan base, but I also wonder if she finds that it has constricted her career and kept her from having a broader fan base. It sure felt a little weird seeing so many overtly gay women in the audience yesterday, but as the evening went on, I understood a little more what this singer might mean to many of them. She has lived her life on her terms and still achieved success in her field. She has not hidden who she is in order to succeed and this has probably given hope to many gay women out there that it is possible to be openly gay and still succeed in life. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have to hide who you are from your family, friends and the world in general, but I know that this is still a reality for many gay people. Having someone like Melissa in the spotlight probably encourages some to live their lives more openly and you could feel the love and pride from the audience.
Anyways, enough heavy thoughts this morning. At the end of the day, she is one great rocker and she sang her heart out and gave all her audience a fantastic concert to remember.
