I just watched a Deep Space Nine episode where they were playing baseball in one of the holosuites. This troubled me.
The holosuites are of finite size; you can see that when the program shuts down. I can understand how they might APPEAR larger, even infinitely large, by projecting holographic images on the walls. I can even understand how one person might experience this virtual unlimited size: as he walks toward a wall, a force field below his feet could move him backwards, so he actually stayes a constant distance from the walls.
But.... how do you accomplish this with a bunch of people, all far away from each other? In this example, they started clustered together at the pitcher's mound, then all spread out to the bases and the outfield. Each had to move in opposite directions, and actually see each other at great distances, not merely images of each other.
Unless the holosuite operates directly on the brain, bypassing the usual sense organs, I don't see how this is accomplished. Any thoughts?.......Jake

Something that has always bothered me too Jake... even in TNG people seem to walk some great distances, farther than the size of the room would seem to indicate, without bumping into a wall or ch-ch-changing direction, OR puking do to inner ear disorientatons.
All I can think of is Arthur C Clarke's quote- "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"
