I was flipping around the channels and saw this last night - hadn't seen it since I was 16. When I was 16 and saw it, I thought it was just a movie about a normal little town. When I saw it again years later after seeing the world, I realized that Peter Bogdonovich & Larry McMurtrey had really captured the essence of small town Texas. The town where I grew up was a little bigger and a great deal more prosperous that the fictional town (Anarene, TX) in the film but the characters were all the same. Unlike some of the other depictions of Texas life such as Dallas, which were so phony, TLPS seemed real to me.
BTW, the show was filmed at Archer City, TX. A couple I know that grew up there appeared as extras in the film when they were in high school. I was through Archer City a few years ago, and although not as bleak as pictured in the film, it was little changed.
Introducing Cybill Sheppard and starring Cloris Leachman, Dennis Quaid, Jeff Bridges, and a few others you would recognize, the flick really is worth the time.
