Desire Trip 07/08/06 – 07/15/06 (John & Nancy)
We just returned from out first trip to Desire. We went with the RIP (Refugees In Paradise) group. They are about 20 couples that spun off from WWW summer 3 years ago. They liked the place so much, they have now returned 2 more times. They are a fun group of people.
We generally agree that Desire is a very nice resort. The place is beautiful. The rooms and the grounds are very well maintained. After the hurricane last year, the availability of shade trees is scarce, but they have provided several pool umbrellas, as well as many palapa’s with beds on the beach.
The service is excellent! No one brought the super size mugs. The bartenders were very nice and efficient. There was even wait staff to take drink orders and deliver them. Several times, I had a new drink delivered without ever ordering. The servers always had a smile on their faces. That was true at all meals, at the bars, and around the pool. The food was much better than Hedo II.
During this week, PDA’s around the pool were not common. They were common on the beach beds, day and night and of course in the “party” room. The disco had it’s share of PDA’s also.
My daily schedule was: Breakfast Pool Pool volleyball Lunch Beach volleyball Pool Evening hot tub Dinner Hang out around lobby bar until disco opens Disco for a while
A “party” room available behind the disco - Beds around the hot tub were nice - Beds on the beach as well as around the swinging beds around the lobby bar were nice
All other things being the same, Desire is a much better place than Hedo II. That being said, let me mention a couple of things I missed about Hedo. Hedo has more shade trees and a piano bar as well as scuba. I prefer the weather in Jamaica in December over that in Cancun in July. I would miss the friends at either place if I did not return. RIP’ers and WWWW folks are both fun people.
If I had to choose between WWW Dec. Hedo II and RIP July Desire, it would be a tough decision, mostly because of the better weather in Dec. Other than that, Desire wins in my book.

Everyone I know who's been to Desire really likes it and always compares it favorably to either of the Hedo's. I may have to put that on my list of places to visit someday, if I could convince the Stud Muffin.
P.S. -- Thanks for the trip report, John!

So here's a question for you....if enough of your friends were going in December, would you choose Hedo II or Desire?? thanks, diane I've never been to Cancun in Dec. but if the weather is close to as nice as Dec in Jamaica, the answer is a resounding YES! I think the weather Cancun in Dec. is similar to Ft Lauderdale in May. It can be a little cool at night if you are running around naked, but I think I would prefer it. I like the great service in Desire. I'm not fond of being hot in the evenings and nights like you experience in July in Cancun. TexJohn

Sounds pretty cool TexJohn, I've wondered about it but I've also read mixed reviews of it. Maybe we'll have to check it out....

The weather in Cancun is almost the same as Jamaica in December. Been there at that time of year.

Great trip report John!!!
I still say we should get a group of people together to go there (when it's cold here in WisconSIN, anyway). April through November wouldn't work for us. I think February would be the best time to go there. (Only because the weather totally sucks here and it's the middle of winter and I'm about ready for some fun in the sun then)

Thanks for posting your trip report TexJohn. I enjoyed reading it. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about Desire and we've been nervous about trying it, but it certainly does sound like you had a great time there and enjoyed the resort.
I think some friends of ours may have been there at the same time as you, a couple called Dean and Lex from Philadelphia. Did you happen to run into them?

I like the great service in Desire. I'm not fond of being hot in the evenings and nights like you experience in July in Cancun. I'm with you on that one TexJohn. In all fairness, the weather in Jamaica in July sucks!!! That's part of the reason I gave up my summer trip to Hedo. My thoughts were....I wonder if there would be a group interested in trying Desire next December. I've done some checking and the typical 1st week in December is already booked completely (by who she wonders 1.5 years in advance??). Many of us here have that week marked for vacation anyway. I'm looking into the possibility of Desire Los Cabo also. Just an idea. diane

I've done some checking and the typical 1st week in December is already booked completely (by who she wonders 1.5 years in advance??). That's strange. Yesterday I looked at the rates at both Desire resorts and there was still availability at both resorts for the same time frame. Hmm .......

They have the rates posted, but someone has a lock on all the rooms for that first week in December. That is according to Ed @ The Travel Hub. But we are doing some other checking, so don't give up just yet. diane

Sabrina~ I hope you and Steve reconsider Hedo this December. Last year, some folks were sorely missed. I'd hate for you to be on that list this year. As for Desires, I've never been there as Hedo works for us. If I can party nekkid with my friends than it's fine with me. Cher

Great trip report TexJohn! We hear nothing but rave reviews from Desire...especially from those traveling with friends. We have thought about going (love those beaches on the Yucatan side), but our past trips to Mexico have always involved getting a bit sick for a few days. I'm assuming this hasn't been a problem for those at Desire, as I don't hear about it. Any experience with that??

We did not hear of any problems with people getting sick from the food/water. There was one guy in the RIP group that was very sick all night long and felt real bad the next day too. I'm sure the massive amount of tequila he consumed had nothing to do with it.

I've been to Mexico twice and never got sickten to my stomach. I always drink the bottled water. The only time I ever got a stomach ailment was at Hedo during WWWW 2004. I felt like dying!

I've been twice to Mexico & sick twice, Chris was sick one of those times as well. Perhaps times have changed. We were very very careful ... yet still sick. Damn that finicky colon!! Desire does sound intriguing....maybe we'll check it out some day!
Thanks for the info!

We definitely want to try Desire at some point, as we keep hearing great things about it. The water is the one concern. We have been to Cancun once, and we both got sick, within an hour of each other. We think the water on the resort was fine, but we went out to a club and had drinks with ice without thinking about it, and we suspect that was the cause. You just can't be too careful.
But that aside, Desire, especially with some friends, would definitely be worth a try.

We have been top Mexico 6 times and never have been sick. If you eat and drink at the resort you will usually be fine. Watch out for the street vendors, those are the one that will make you wish you died.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
