Every three years, Chicago hosts a contingent of "Tall Ships" (i.e., large vessels with sails) from around the world. I have no idea what these ships do the rest of the time, but for the past week, they have been in our harbor. Today, I played hookey from work and went down to the lakefront to see if I could capture their glory photographically.
Basically, the answer was no. The visiting ships were moored up at the docks for visitors to tour, with their sails furled. Not very interesting. But..... there are two other tall ships that are permanently based here, at Navy Pier, specifically to give rides on Lake Michigan to tourists. They are the Windy and the Windy II. I got some good shots of them sailing out and about on the lake. Here goes......
This first one is the Windy against the skyline, just heading out of its dock at Navy Pier.
Here it is again, rounding the buoy to take it out into open water. You students of the visual arts will recognize a fine example of the classic "rule of thirds."
Next, two shots as it begins to raise its sails. You can see the other ship approaching in the first of these shots.
Here is the Windy II approaching. Basically, it is completing its run full of tourists as the Windy I is heading out.
Here are the Windy and the Windy II passing (likes ships in the night!). Note the slightly different style of rigging. Maybe someone who knows more about such things (Tex?) can tell us the technical names for these types of riggings.
And finally, here is a gull (obviously not a seagull; a lake gull?) watching the proceedings.
Note that these particular two ships are here all the time, not just during Tall Ship week, and if you feel like a ride, head on over any time. Also note that I may have mixed up the labels about which one is the Windy and which is the Windy II. Oh well, what do you expect for nothing?........Jake
