The BANQUET BUG, by Geling Yan got great reviews on Amazon, sounded interesting so I ordered it. It’s about a farmer’s son in China that goes to the city and starts impersonating a journalist so he can get into the lavish banquets put on by big companies to get publicity for causes, products and so on.
The main character is married, poor and falls in love with the food available at the banquets in Beijing, not to mention the envelopes with cash. His adventures include a love affair with a foot massage girl, a famous painter, crooked real estate developer, and political corruption among other current social dramas in modern day China.
Overall the book was interesting but nothing great, a fast read. Maybe good for the beach.
