Patty and I watched this movie together the other night, and it reminded me how much i loved the book.
James Bradley (forgive me if this book has been done here...im still new ;D ) goes on a quest to find out more about his father's role in the battle of iwo jima. Apparently he had always known his dad was in the famous flag raising photo, but never really talked to his Dad about it.
This book was an excellently done history/coming to grips with family book. If you have any interest in world war 2 (i have a ton) this book will not disappoint. The details of the battle for iwo jima can be a little grisly, but its a fast read, about one of the most important, and historic battles (and photographs: this is the most often reproduced photo of all time) in history.
I am sure that some of you would enjoy it.

Never read the book, but I *did* see the film that was based on this book in my movie class back in October and thought it was one of the best films of '06. The review is here.

bb, the book is pretty damned spectacular. full of facts, and interesting tidbits, and you get a better sense of who the characters in the movie were....this is NOT fiction, but a lovingly written tale about a man who didnt share enough with his son when he was alive, and his son's endeavor to understand his dad better after he died.
Defenitely worth reading, and defenitely worth watching...the book helps the movie along tho.

I loved the book.
I wasn't very thrilled with the movie. Like many movies, it just didn't get the point across like the book. In fact, I didn't even watch the end of the movie. Plus I had war nighmares the night we purchased the movie.
