Just finished the above book (over 800 pages, read it in less than a week ~helps that I was on vacation). The author is Canadian (Anne Marie MacDonald) and her last book was an Oprah pick (Fall on Your Knees, also an awesome book).
It's a great read, touches on child abuse, the Cold War, the race to the Moon, growing up in the early 60's and so much more. It's hard to do it justice in a few sentences and it's not always the easiest read due to the subject matter, but it is worth the effort.

Thanks Bob. Guess I'm coming across as just a tad overly-Canadian!! I'll try to tone it down. I just mentioned the author was Canadian because very few people will likely have heard of her and her books might be harder to get in the American book stores, but she is a very thought-provoking author and there are serious twists at the end of both books. Worth reading. Most of my favorite authors are either American (Leon Uris, Irving Wallace, Tom Clancy) Irish (Maeve Binchy) or British ( Len Deighton, John Le Carre, Val McDermid & Ian Rankin)...........geez, am I ever dating myself here! Bob I ran this site through the Canadian-o-meter, and it didn't pass saying that the site sells neither maple syrup, nor poutine. What's up with that?
