Any fans of alternate history out there? I love this sort of story and though several people write this genre well Turtledove is in a class all his own. I think I have just about everything he has published. John

Over Here... I have been a HUGE fan of Turtledove's alternative US history series. Read his latest while on vacation... will the Confederacy get 'the bomb' first??

I've seen this series in the SF section at the local bookstore, and always figured I might check them out when I have room in my schedule. Thanks for the endorsements!.......Jake

Hey Druid, Just finished Book 2 and now I see Book 3 is out. I'm real curious to see how he is going to wrap up the story. Good to find another fan out there.

Jake This is now a 10 book series!! To date it has been set up as a one book starter, followed by three trilogies, with the 10th book probably coming out in early '07. The first book "How Few Remain" sets up the triliogies with 'Lee's Orders' at Gettysburg not becoming 'lost', and the alternative time line begins. You could possibly pick up reading the series anywhere, but you would be lost for a while as the main characters continue across books and across trilogies. Turtledove tells the story as a series of vignettes. I have counted up to 11 parallel subplots at any one point in time. I have not found this cumbersome, and it really is a good method to come at all aspects of telling the whole story without resorting to 'newsflashes' or radio anouncements. Similar to Tolkein's writing style really. If its important to the story, one of the characters is there experiencing it. A sound basis in actual history is good for the reader to have because familiar names are placed into entirely new context (i.e. McArthur vs Patton who would come out better?). Speculative, of course, but VERY entertaining. Amazon linkI see that you can get both 'How Few Remain' and the first book of the first trilogy 'The Great War: American Front' for $16... not bad
