I recently re-read an old favorite, "Nine Princes In Amber" by Roger Zelazny. No, this is not a porn story of a gang bang, but a science fiction fantasy about nine feuding brothers, fighting for control of the "one true world" of Amber. It's kind of SF, kind of fantasy, kind of sword-and-sorcery, all with a very tongue-in-cheek (again, not in a porn sense) style. When I read it years ago (the seventies, I think) there were five books in the series. Now they are up to ten. (There are unlikely to be any more, as Zelazny has croaked.) The first one was great, and I've just started on the second, "The Guns Of Avalon." Anyone else familiar with this series? Or anything else by Zelazny? (one of my favorite authors).......Jake

I generally don't read fantasy/sword stuff, but adore SF. So, Jake, what exactly do you get out of his work? For example, I read Asimov for the deeper understanding of the psychology and sociology of "what is man" that he interprets through his tales.

What do I get out of it? Well, several things. First and foremost, I like the tone. The books are narrated by the main character, and he is clearly a smart-ass. The way he describes things is hilarious, especially when he mixes modern-day terms in with the medieval concepts. Second, the plot is rather complex and convoluted, and only gradually revealed, so you get the pleasure of gradually unraveling the mysteries. There are also many, many references to Shakespeare, King Aurthur, and other historical and mythological worlds, which makes you feel clever when you catch them.
Not much of the Asimov "what is man" type of stuff, though.
