Recently finish this historical novel by Wm. F. Buckley about the life of Eugene McCarthy.
Buckley knew McCarthy and did ample research for this novel. I enjoyed it and am amazed at some of the parallels to our current efforts to find the terrorist among us. The hunt for communists in the 50's and 60's and the current jihads terrorist both infringed upon our 'rights' to privacy.
In McCarthy's case, he was deemed the devil simply because of what he did know. Like J Edgar Hoover knowing who the communist agents were in our government, but not sharing this data with the President or others, because outing them would tell the Russians that we had broken their code. BTW, McCarthy keep Hoover's secret at the time because Hoover had support him in the past.
I think McCarthy got a bad rap historically. He was a patriot, although too loyal for his own good.
It's an enlightening read.

Gee, Anita -
The book must have made a really deep impression on you if you couldn't remember that his name wasn't "Eugene" but "Joe"...
