I just heard an interesting factoid, and am interested if the stats play out as reported on this board...
"by accident" or "on accident"
which is your preferred phrase?
Zilla (who couldn't remember which one I use and they both sound "correct", so I did a search. Apparently I use neither. Accidentally appears to be my personal choice.)

Why don't you enlighten us and tell us your point?? Or would being "direct" not be your "preferred" style?? Inquiring minds would like to know.
..........Bob (surprised that Zilla "accidentally" can't find where she used either).

I think I would use "by accident" over "on accident," although I'd be even more likely to say "by mistake."
Which is interesting, because the opposite, in my preferred vernacular, would be "on purpose."

Just don't say, "My bad." I want to clobber every slacker douchebag who uses that stupid phrase.

Inquiring minds would like to know. ..........Bob (surprised that Zilla "accidentally" can't find where she used either). Oddly enough, I thought I was very direct. I am checking the statistics of the answers I get from people on this board against the statistic I heard to see if those statistics can stand on their own. How do you feel I was not being direct? Now, I suppose since you seem loathe to answer that I could do a search on the word accident used by the member DrBob anytime in the last 700 days and limit it to 100 responses and find out the answer (which was how I searched for my own usage patterns). It would appear that you use " by accident" Zilla (begging DrBob to link to a place where I have used either "by accident" or "on accident" in my discussions *other* than in this thread)

Oddly enough, I thought I was very direct. Very odd indeed. Have you thought lately about taking a vacation? .........Bob ================= Zilla (begging DrBob to link to a place where I have used either "by accident" or "on accident" in my discussions *other* than in this thread) ================= Do tell!!

Very odd indeed. Have you thought lately about taking a vacation? .........Bob Doubly odd since Jake seemed to understand what I was asking and yet it eluded you... Zilla (who wants to assure anyone else who is willing to answer that neither answer is grammatically incorrect, so you can't be *wrong* in using one over the other)

Which is interesting, because the opposite, in my preferred vernacular, would be "on purpose." Usage: It is not by accident that DrBob pushes Zilla's buttons because he is being an asshole on purpose. By contrast, the image in Heidi's signature line is on porpoise. Just thought I'd clear that up.

Just thought I'd clear that up. Thanks, beeb!! ;D ;D Actually, I didn't have enough context from what Zilla posted to understand. For instance, the headline "Police refuse to answer questions on accident!" - correctly notes their refusal to discuss an accident (for instance, a car wreck). Substitute "by" for the "on" and you have a totally and completely different meaning in that phrase. ...........Bob (simply pointing out additional ways to interpret what some thought was very straightforward, but clearly was not)
