Upon my return to work after vacation I found out that I am a "luxury that my boss can not afford to keep". I got laid off. Now mind you having some free time pre holiday is nice but I feel a little like deja vu. Last year around this same time of year the restaurant I had been working for as the manager for the last 10 years got sold and I was out of a job then too. I know it will all work out and everything will be fine, who knows which better opportunity awaits me. The worse part is the not knowing what the next step in my life is.

Patty, I am so sorry... That is a sucky surprise here at the holidays. Enjoy your family, have a wonderful Christmas (or hanakuh, Festivas, whatever it is and know it means something better is just around the corner! The Road Not TakenTwo roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. ~Robert Frost

Ah shit, Patty! Welcome fuckin' home, right? This is where this mantra comes in handy: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
Take a week or two to chill and get past the insult of economics. This time is yours and you will never regret being off. You are infinitely capable and employable, and people start hiring again in January. Have faith!
(If you need any help with application letters, let me know if I can assist.) Know that I'm rooting for you!

Pat,
It's hard to find people with extensive management knowledge in the restaurant business. I'm confident you will have lots of opportunity as soon as you desire.

You are in the NY/NJ area? If so I can ask around my office what restaurants are looking for managers.

Big Hugs Patty,
I'm so sorry you lost your job. That totally sucks, Merry Fricking Cristmas. SHEESH
Something better will be along soon. Just take some time to relax (if that's possible this time of year) for a little while and get ready for the holidays.

We have got to do something about the run of bad 'karma' involving relationships and now jobs, thats running around this board. That's for sure! As if Patty (my Patty) and I don't have enough life issues - the company I work for (Cox Communications) just sold off the Texas market to the WORST cable service provider in the nation (IMHO). Now we find out that the chiropractic clinic that Patty works for (owned by a chiropractor in Denver) may be for sale. But you know what - we'll make it through this too. And if history holds true to form - we'll come out on top - again. Patty - best of luck to you! One door shut is just another door opened. Also, if you truly were a "luxury" he couldn't afford - he is probably still in a worse position than you anyway! Hang in there! D

Thanks for all your support... I do know it will get better and I will find where and what I should be doing, in the meantime I am taking naps, visiting friends & family (tis the season) Christmas shopping trying to clean my house and enjoy the time off. As far as finding a new job I will start looking AFTER the holidays. I don't want to take something that will disappear the 1st of the year. Patty

Patty -
This is ironic...
Your boss will miss "the luxury that he can not afford to keep"... Bastard!!
I still have connections by your way - let me know if you need help. Or just move to NC. I know someone that can get you a job!! ;D
