My god, who will they pick next? Bugs? WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 - On the heels of electoral victories barring same-sex marriage, some influential conservative Christian groups are turning their attention to a new target: the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants. "Does anybody here know SpongeBob?" Dr. James C. Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, asked the guests Tuesday night at a black-tie dinner for members of Congress and political allies to celebrate the election results. SpongeBob needed no introduction. In addition to his popularity among children, who watch his cartoon show, he has become a well-known camp figure among adult gay men, perhaps because he holds hands with his animated sidekick Patrick and likes to watch the imaginary television show "The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy." Now, Dr. Dobson said, SpongeBob's creators had enlisted him in a "pro-homosexual video," in which he appeared alongside children's television colleagues like Barney and Jimmy Neutron, among many others. The makers of the video, he said, planned to mail it to thousands of elementary schools to promote a "tolerance pledge" that includes tolerance for differences of "sexual identity." The video's creator, Nile Rodgers, who wrote the disco hit "We Are Family," said Mr. Dobson's objection stemmed from a misunderstanding. Mr. Rodgers said he founded the We Are Family Foundation after the Sept. 11 attacks to create a music video to teach children about multiculturalism. The video has appeared on television networks, and nothing in it or its accompanying materials refers to sexual identity. The pledge, borrowed from the Southern Poverty Law Center, is not mentioned on the video and is available only on the group's Web site. Mr. Rodgers suggested that Dr. Dobson and the American Family Association, the conservative Christian group that first sounded the alarm, might have been confused because of an unrelated Web site belonging to another group called "We Are Family," which supports gay youth. "The fact that some people may be upset with each other peoples' lifestyles, that is O.K.," Mr. Rodgers said. "We are just talking about respect." Mark Barondess, the foundation's lawyer, said the critics "need medication." On Wednesday however, Paul Batura, assistant to Mr. Dobson at Focus on the Family, said the group stood by its accusation. "We see the video as an insidious means by which the organization is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," he said. "It is a classic bait and switch."

I don't know if Spooge-Bob is gay or not, and I don't really care. But he's every bit as annoying as Barney. I wish somebody would use him as a contraceptive and then flush him......Jake

I like SpongeBob. I'm wearing SpongeBob boxers as I type. One sad part of this hoo-ha these folks are trying to stir, is they like to put forth that they are sanctioned by the election results. We had this same shit when Uncle Ronnie was asleep in D.C....uh, I mean in charge in D.C.. What next Andrea Dworkin going to raise her fugly head and start another porn crusade? ??

There are Wacko's out there on both sides. Seen the video this evening and I seen no problem with it being for school age kids.

Sponge Bob is just a sweet gentle little ocean creature. To me Bob is asexual, not homosexual.
That damn dinosaur is a whole nuther story. However, I don't even think that Barney is bad for the kiddo's. I have personal problem with Barney that goes beyond the TV show. Several years ago, involved in Jaycees, we had a Summerfest and we rented a Barney costume. Yes me, stupid me, Oh I have fun with kids me, dressed up as Barney, in August, in Alabama humidity, not knowing the damn "I love you, you love me" song. I had to run find my kids and have them teach it to me quickly so the little children didn't lynch me! It only lasted a couple of hours, but by the time it was over I had learned either a great appreciation or a great loathing towards that purple monster. Possibly both.

Hey, now that I think about it... Rocky the Flying Squirrel was really questionable too... Male name, high effeminate voice, and the fact that he was a "Flying" squirrel (we all KNOW that has GOT to be code for something), PLUS he hung out with a dude with a HUGE nose (OH WILL THE SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES NEVER CEASE).
God I wish that these people would get something constructive to do. They must have WAY too much time on their hands to think this crap up.

Fortunately when our children watch it they see it for what it really is, harmless childrens' entertainment. It's sad that these people try to steal the innocence from children with their warped minds and twisted ideas.

A hilarious and pointed look at the whole debacle. I will issue a warning right up front. RIGHT-WINGERS BEWARE-You can't get any more left than this columnist. But you liberals out there...save it and read him regularly....he has a way with words: www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/gate/archive/2005/01/26/notes012605.DTLAnd we look at such people and we shake our heads and sigh, trying to understand how excruciating it must be to go through life feeling as though you're stuck like a pinned bug to a perverted universe that can't be trusted, one that they desperately hope will be over real soon now, just like the "Left Behind" books promise, so they can forget how miserable and lost and distressed they feel and so they may finally leave their not-so-secret homosexual fantasies behind and drive their big manly SUVs to the Promised Land. Edited to correct CAN TO CAN'T!

When it comes to right and wrong Deb, I have to agree that Columnist is right. This homophobic asshole that claims Spongebob is gay needs to really get a life. I have watch the show with my young nephew and for Pete's sake, he is no more homosexual than, Kermit the Frog, Rocky The Fly Squirrel, the Power Rangers, and the Threes Stooges(by the way, don't you remember them always sleeping together). It's a fucking cartoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Joe.

Yep, I don't know that I can think of a REAL gay cartoon character. Especially on any of the shows aimed at Y14 and below.
Now if we move to The Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Space Ghost Coast to Coast...really late night Cartoon Network...I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. But the small easily influenced kiddos should be in the bed.

You know, I've followed Dr. Dobson's career since I was in college, but I think he's gone over the edge here.
I am a big Songebob fan, and I think he's a positive influence on kids. If you've ever seen the show, you know that he's a kind, honest, hard-working individual with a heart of gold....aren't those the kinds of values that you'd want to instill in a child?
His friend patrick is quite a few fries short of a happy meal, but that doesn't stop Spongebob from being his best friend.
Squidward is the curmudgeon of the trio, but that doesn't stop SpongeBob from trying to like him either.
The problem with looking at a children's show from an adult perspective is just that---you're looking at it from an adult's perspective.
Despite what Dr. Dobson says, SpongeBob is porbably one of the more truly "Christian" characters out there.

Whenever I hear the name Sponge Bob, it reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where Elaine bought up all her favorite contraception devices and was selective as to who was gong to be "Sponge-Worthy" LOL
