I can't believe this message board has been up for nearly a day, and I haven't said anything nasty about Tom Cruise yet! I must be slipping. Anyway, as you probably know by now, I can't stand the miscreant. I've pretty much said all I have to say about him right here: tnmc.homestead.com/TomCruise.html But I'm dying to hear all of youse guys' reasons for loathing him as well. C'mon, what do you say?......Jake

Jealousy? Nah, that ain't it. Jake's just pissed off because a the CHARACTER played by TC in "Risky Business" had the nerve to bad-mouth his alma mater. Duh! Despite his minor inability to accept that it was JUST A MOVIE and that Joel and Tom are not the same person with the same views ... he still hates Tom. I have no strong feelings for Tom either way. I like only about 50% of his films. I used to like 'Jerry McGuire' until Jake's comments on TC's constant "mugging for the camera" would no longer let me take the movie seriously. LOL! Now I can't watch a TC movie without watching his facial expressions closely. Gee, thanks Honey!

I guess I shouldn't have phrased it as "bad-mouthing". In my opinion it wasn't really a dis. Joel, when he realized he wasn't going to make it to an Ivy League school (I think he was aiming for Princeton) stated that it was looked like he was going to the U of I instead. Jake took it as if Joel thought he was settling for the least desirable prospect on the list.

His craven utterances about my beloved alma mater are only a small part of my hatred for this misbegotten meathead. There is also his inability to act, his inability to wipe the smirking smug smile off his face, and his habit of ruining movie after movie that should have been good.
Then there is his stupid fake name, his stupid fake hair, and his stupid fake religion, not to mention his stupid crooked teeth. Crowbar open your wallet and get them fixed, already, dickweed!
And of course there is his penchant for working with Steven Spielberg, another Hollywood denizen who is beneath contempt. The reasons for my Cruise-hatred run far deeper than just Risky Business!......Jake

He has to be the most well rewarded people in the history of Hollywood who can't act...... And Speilberg is on your list... What the hell has he done wrong? ?

Spielberg always manages to piss me off with his manipulative directing style so that I can't even bear to go to his movies anymore. The first to bug me was ET. He's dead, oh, no! Hey, he's NOT dead, Yay!!! Gimme a break.
Jurassic Park: same thing, all these doe-eyed kids you're supposed to fall in love with, then he dangles them over a raptor's mouth. Manipulation! Saving Private Ryan: all his brothers are dead! Oh noo!!!! We have to save him!!! More manipulation. And on and on it goes. I don't bother seeing his movies any more.
The only movies of his I could bear are the Indiana Jones ones, because George Lucas is a stronger producer than Spielberg is a director, and manages to keep all the manipulation on an entertaining, rather than annoying, level.
But, that's just me. Lots of people seem to like having their emotions whipsawed with such skill......Jake

Now come on CJ, name me a Hollywood movie that has no script manipulation...I mean ever since Eisenstein in Russia....the "silver screen" has been all about manipulating the emotions, thoughts and feelings of the audience. Dat's what it's all about....even documentaries......uh, seems I remember sumpthin about the U-boat ...I mean swift boat boys......I bet there was even a hint of manipulation in their dead on truth exposing through 3d party unrelated experiences........just a hint.

Harry, I completey agree with you. All movies are manipulative to some degree. My problems with Spielberg are strictly my own and personal, and I don't expect others to agree with them. His transgressions annoy me, but I don't expect them to annoy everyone. That's why this is an anti-Tom-Cruise thread, not an anti-Spielberg thread.
However, I DO expect all of youse guys to hate Mr. Cruise as much as I do! Let the HATING begin!.....Jake

What about Schindler's list winner of seven Acadamy Awards? BTW Top Gun is my favorite movie of all time, I watch it 5-10 times a year. I love that movie. I don't have any affinity for Tom Cruise although he did a great job in Top Gun. IMHO of course.

I didn't see Schindler's List; it came out after my Spielberg Boycott began. As for the Academy Awards, they are another thing I despise. It's just Hollywood insiders giving each other blowjobs. (wonder if that will come through the censor software?)
Top Gun? The very thought of that movie makes we want to launch my lunch. But I'm glad you enjoy it.....Jake

The Color of Money a film about the redemption of Fast Eddie Felson. Was a great flick with Tom Cruise and the one and only fast Eddie himself (The Hustler) Paul Newman. Yea, not as good as the Hustler with Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason) and George C Scott. But almost as good.
