www.ny1.com/ny/Search/SubTopic/index.html?&contentintid=49719&search_result=1 APRIL 05TH, 2005 A missing man was discovered Tuesday inside a stuck elevator in the Bronx apartment building where he was headed to deliver food four days ago. Ming Kung Chen, 35, was taken to Montefiore Medical Center to be treated for dehydration. He was released Tuesday afternoon. "He wants to thank everyone who spent time looking for him in the past four days," said Chen's friend Tina Lin, at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. Chen, who doesn't speak much English, was reported missing Friday night after not returning from a delivery to Tracey Towers, a massive apartment complex near the Mosholu Parkway in Bedford Park. His bicycle was found outside and there were fears he had been mugged, or worse, for the money he was carrying. Police searched the building over the weekend, but didn't locate him. Just before 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Fire Department received a call about an elevator stuck between the fourth and fifth floors. Chen says he was finally able to alert building workers through an emergency intercom. The Fire Department, with the help of a mechanic, was able to bring the elevator down to the lobby. “They called us because somebody was communicating to the building personnel through the intercom system,” said Peter Chadwick of FDNY Ladder Company 27. “They told us, ‘We think the guy is drunk.’ We said to ask him what floor he is on. They said, ‘We can't understand what the guy is saying. He's drunk.’ Little did they know he wasn't drunk; he was probably felling the effects of being on the elevator for four days.”<br> Police had searched the building over the weekend. Tracey Towers' management says the first time anyone heard the elevator alarm was Tuesday morning. The Department of Buildings says a repairman came to the building Monday afternoon and cut power to the elevator when he noticed it wasn't working. Another mechanic came by Tuesday morning, saw it wasn't running and tried the intercom. That's how he discovered someone was inside. The elevator was brought down to the lobby and Chen was taken out. "For a guy who was supposedly there for three days, he didn't look too bad to me, but he was a little wobbly when he was walking," said Chadwick. "I have no idea how he felt because we weren't able to communicate with him." When he was brought to the hospital, the emergency room doctor said Chen looked disheveled and very tired and was suffering from mild to moderate dehydration. "He felt dizzy, lightheaded, had some headache he felt weak," said Dr. Babak Toosi of Montefiore Hospital. "I believe at some point he almost passed out, but he actually never lost consciousness in the elevator." When asked at the news conference if he ever tried to use the intercom or emergency bell, Chen didn't answer. Police sources say his family told them he is in this country illegally. City Councilman John Liu accused the NYPD of violating a Bloomberg administration policy not to reveal anyone's immigration status out of concern federal authorities might take action. The department responded that it did not give out the information, saying it can't be blamed if the news media use their sources. As for Chen, he says he may sue building management, because tenants say elevators there are often broken.

Any chance that the same lawyer who wins him the award settlement for the broken elevator will also be the same one to prosecute him for being in the country illegally? Nah, I guess that would be a little too much justice, even for this country.
BTW, upon initial examination, doctors originally thought the man was suffering from jaundice. Then the police explained to them that he wasn't jaundiced, he was only Chinese.

Yeah, and there's some group pissed off at the police for releasing his immigration status to the media.
Some criminals just don't want publicity.

Yeah, and there's some group pissed off at the police for releasing his immigration status to the media. That pisses me off. You have an illegal alien running around and the cops can't even tell someone about it. What a fucking crock of shit that is. Joe.

I don't know about you guys in California, but here in New York, we NEED these guys to bring us our lunch!!! They work their asses off, on their bicycles, to deliver our food. This guy was stuck in an elevator for days and all you can say is ship him off. Maybe, joe, we should ship off your maid and gardener, then you can pay $10/hour + benefits for an american to tend your house and garden!

First of all we have no maid and I do all my own garden/yard work. Secondly he is here illegally. Is there something about that word you don't understand? It has one simple meaning or can the liberal mind not grasp it? So you liberals want to keep them here illegally and pay them less than minimum wage to serve you. Work them 50 to 60 hours per week with no overtime or benefits, just to get your fucking lunch. What's the matter can't get your own food. That's just disgusting. Joe.

Unfortunately, it's not always so simple. As someone who works in the software development industry, I take great offense to the fact that aliens (regardless of their country of origin, regardless of their legality) have taken jobs away from qualified American workers both here in this country and abroad because they'll gladly work substantially cheaper, and often, substantially longer and under substantially worse working conditions.
At the same time, though, this guy was clearly not what is often called a "knowledge worker". Didn't really have much in the way of marketable skills that would make him highly employable. He worked here cheaply and probably long hours and under bad conditions -- yet likely happy to do so because he couldn't make out as well at home.
Forgive me if I'm being presumptuous here by answering for Irish Eyes, but here in NYC, it's not always that easy to just go out and get your own food. Here, it's a fast - paced, high - stress environment in a densely crowded location. You've gotta go out, risk your life dodging traffic (and who knows what else), stand on a long line and pay an exorbitant sum for your food. Many companies (although granted, depending on the line of work) wouldn't put up with you doing that on a daily basis -- not when they need everything NOW because if they don't get it NOW, everyone suffers. It's called competition. It's called capitalism. It's called the American Way.

It's called competition. It's called capitalism. It's called the American Way. What do you think we live a slow pace life out here, and they give us or food for nothing? Let's look at the facts. 1. He is/was here illegally. 2. The company that hired him, family or not should be fined big time, because it is illegal to hire undocumented workers in this country. He fit's that description. 3. They are most likely paying him less than minimum wage with no overtime, again illegal on the part of the employer. 4. These employers need to hire buy the rules. If it cost them 10 to 15 buck per hour to hire some one to deliver your "Lunch", pass the cost on to you. Simple solutions. But it looks like New Yorkers want an exception to the laws just to fit their dietary needs. Bullshit. Ship the guys ass back today. A one way ticket to China. You could always brown bag it from home to. All of my employee's are Mexicans. Yes they are the only ones who will work in the vineyards. Everyone that I hire has the proper INS cards, Social Security card, fills out and files the proper employment forms. I employe any were from 5 to 25 at different times of the year and each one must meet the above rules or no work. No exceptions to the rule. I also pay way above the minimum wage and here it is $6.75 per hour. I pay in the 8 to 14 per hour area. Now I am a small employer compared to most others, but if I can do it so can other employers. There is not one excuse in the book for not following the rules except for stupidity, and ignorance. Joe.

So you people in New York who want your lunch delivered because your to lazy to get it yourself, go ahead and keep spending 10 billion on Illegal Aliens who use Government Services.
Maybe they should add that cost to the price of your lunch to?
Joe.
