God Bless America (2011). This was a very strange movie. Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, this is the story of an ordinary schlub who has HAD IT up to here, and decides to go on a killing spree. His doctor has told him that he has an inoperable brain tumor, and mere months to live. So he decides, what the fuck. He is cheesed off at the lack of civility in the world, in particular with respect to reality show contestants, and decides to do some cleansing of the world. But he doesn't limit himself to game show contestants. He gets himself some weapons and blows away all manner of miscreants that most of us would love to kill, but don't have the balls to.
The main character is played by Joel Murray, one of Bill's myriad of brothers. His partner in crime is a teenage girl, played by Tara Lynne Barr. Together, they live out all the fantasies that you can imagine.
I'm not sure what the moral intention is of the movie makers. Frank and Roxy (the main characters) don't seem to have a political agenda; they are equal opportunity exterminators, killing liberal and conservative annoyances alike. I think the point of the movie was just to give us some cathartic release, and hopefully prevent us from SNAPPING and doing likewise ourselves. In any case, it was fun, and funny, and I recommend it. Available on Netflix streaming.
ASIDE to Mad Men fans: Joel Murray, the main character, played "Freddy Rumsen" on Mad Men, a hilarious and very poignant character, and you can see insights into the same sort of character in this movie. His demeanor and delivery was every bit as ironic, snide, and guiltily relatable here as it was there. If you ever wondered what Freddy Rumsen did after getting fired from Sterling Cooper, this could answer your questions!
