Saw Man of Steel yesterday afternoon. We really have been spoiled in recent times with superhero movies, and this Superman reboot didn't disappoint. Clark Kent's story is retold using a mix of present day scenes and flashbacks in the first half of the movie to give us director Zack Snyder's reinterpretation of the Superman backstory, before bringing us up to date for the battle royale with fellow Kryptonian General Zod.
I've read reviews slamming this movie for not being true to the 'ethos' of Superman history, and to an extent I agree with them. But I went with my daughters aged 18 and 16 as a Father's Day treat, and like many young people they care nothing for comic books and knew nothing of the Superman lore, but they loved the move for what it is, a modern day action movie for modern audiences.
I loved it.

I am actually tempted to see this one, despite being completely super-heroed out. I like Zack Snyder's work, and this one looks like an actual fresh take on the subject.

It's definitely a fresh take. It's darker than the previous 2006 reboot and does an excellent job of recapping Clark Kent's life as he grows up and, under the guidance of his adoptive father, learns of his powers. And the fight scenes that dominate the final third of the movie are worth the price of admission alone.

On my plans to see this weekend. I think the idea of a fresh take doesn't hurt.

Wow. Just wow.
This movie was awesome. I loved the dark, grim tones, the sense of desperation, the inexorable hands of fate. And I loved that the bad guy wasn't just some insane maniac, but an actual person with an actual, understandable agenda. Also, none of that stupid "secret identity" crap that makes most superhero movies so silly.
And the look was just wonderful. Zack Snyder has a way of making a movie look downright mystical.
I thought half-way through that they would go the entire movie without anyone using the word "superman." They almost made it.
Added: reading through some discussion over at the Straight Dope Message Board, someone made a cogent comment that probably explains why I liked this movie so much. It is actually more of a science fiction movie than a super-hero movie. And I think that makes a lot of sense. It has more in common with The Fifth Element than with Batman or Ironman.

Just seen it. I agree it was great. Like the new turn on the story. I think it was much better than Ironman.

Now that I have a little time to expand my thoughts. Growing up Superman was always Numero Uno for me, and I have always followed the story of his origin over the years in different issue of the comics, TV shows and movies with all of them always being basically the same.
I enjoyed the redo, kick start, or whatever you want to call this new movie version. A different beginning with the same characters but a nice touch to keep you interested in where they are going with this story.
As far as the acting I thought everyone was great. Russell Crowe did a excellent job with his role of Jor-el, His accent is something that you could image a real Jor-el sounding like and they kind of made him a bad ass. Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent was perfect. At his age and with his looks he was perfect for his role. Amy Adams a Lois Lane. nice ass don't need to say anymore. Michael Shannon as General Zod. The perfect look, much better than Terence Stamp in Superman II. Shannon is a regular on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. He plays Federal Agent Nelson Van Alden.
Henry Cavill the perfect Superman.Doesn't look like a pussy like Christopher Reeve did(no offense to Mr.Reeve.) Carvill is built like a shit brick house (the guy is good looking). I think his smile made the whole role for his character. It is the perfect Superman smile. I first seen him in the Showtime series the Tudors and I like him then. I think he has great future. I read some place that he came in second to Daniel Craig for the role of James Bond.
Superman has been portrayed on TV and in the Movies by George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Dean Cane, and Tom Welling. Cavill is the best yet.
This movie was no funny love story between Lois Lane and Superman. No stupid looking Clark Kent tripping over garbage cans, or acting like a first class nerd. It was a well done superhero movie. Bring on more.

I agree with you, Joe, the casting was excellent. Where I differ with you, though, is that I didn't know ANY of these actors* in advance of this movie. But I still thought they were all just perfect for their roles.
*well, of course I knew Russell Crow and Kevin Costner, but none of the main characters.
