A few weeks ago, my lower back went out bad. The pain went across my lumbar region and down the outside of my right leg. After drug pain management and chiropractic therapy, the doctor and I decided to get an MRI and see a pain managment doctor. I saw her on June 10, and decided to do the epidural steroid injections on Wednesday. During the injection, I lost the ability to move my right leg. I was admitted to the hospital that night for observation. While there I saw a back surgeon (orthopedist) and a neurologist. On Sunday I was transfered to Georgetown University Hospital. To shorten this a bit, I had a microdiscecomy and lambenectomy. (Dr. Bob, did I get those right?). It sounds like the PM doctor got too close to the nerve with the steroids.
I should be out Monday or Tuesday going to the house for a few days and back to the boat by next week. PT and a walker for a few more weeks.

I slipped a disc a few years ago (I was actually on a date at the time but that's another story) and have never known pain like it. I was out of action for weeks. So I have great empathy with what you are going through and wish you a full and speedy recovery.

I hope you get better quickly!

The recovery has been very quick. I was walking with a walker about 4 hours post-op. I really love Georgetown University Hospital Center. They listened to me at all times and did what I needed them to do when I needed it done. St. Mary's Hospital (where I started) was also great. I left DC about 2:00 yesterday. My daughter and her boyfriend are taking care of me at the house.
Let's hope Gary's surgery in a couple weeks goes just as easy.

We came back to the boat last night. I'm able to get around ok for the most part. I'm not to do any bending twisting or stretching or lift anything over 5 pounds. Gary and I just took a short walk and my back and leg are on fire. Not too bad considering I was basically paralyzed last week. I see a hematologist tomorrow to see how long I need to be on blood thinners (Lovenox) for. I'll see one of the surgery team on Thursday. Gary has a colonoscopy on Tuesday with follow-up with his surgeon on Wednesday to schedule a bowel resection.
