Nice pictures Simon. I see one of you must have enjoyed the escargot. Also the mussels and fries looked good.

Beautiful pictures Simon. Just curious, how long was the crossing? Seems like Dover to Calais is twenty something miles. The Dover picture reminded me of my dad, who was fond of "There'll Be Bluebirds Over..." Looks like a nice trip.

Beautiful pictures Simon. Just curious, how long was the crossing? Seems like Dover to Calais is twenty something miles. The Dover picture reminded me of my dad, who was fond of "There'll Be Bluebirds Over..." Looks like a nice trip The crossing is 1.5 hours, though on the way back we were late leaving Calais so the captain must have put his foot down and we made it back in an hour and twenty minutes. There used to be two hovercraft doing the crossing as well, and they managed it in 30 minutes. But they could only carry about 50 cars and were cramped and noisy with an interior like a commercial aircraft where you remained in your seat, unlike the car ferry which can carry 500 cars and you can wander around on and visit the various bars, restaurants and shops. I only ever did one return trip across The Channel using the hovercrafts and it was the only time in my life I have ever felt seasick. The channel tunnel sadly put them out of business. Those are indeed the very same white cliffs. To a Brit seeing them as we return from Europe evokes the same feelings an American might get sailing into New York and seeing the Statue of Liberty.

Next weekend we are making the same Dover to Calais crossing then driving one hour through France to Belgium. I've never been to Belgium before but do know that they don't have their own language as such, with French and Dutch being the main languages spoken and some German near the border with Germany. I speak no Dutch, which always sounds to me like the speaker is hacking up a mouthful of snot to spit at you, but thankfully I speak enough French to get by in the area we are staying in. Some years ago my ex wife and I went to Denmark and it was only as we walked off the boat we realised we did not speak a single word of Danish between us. We didn't even know how to say please and thank you. We felt so ashamed!

I wouldn't worry about it. If they had any self respect, they would have learned to speak English.
By the by, the White Cliffs of Dover always make me think of the Beatles and the film Help!

I wouldn't worry about it. If they had any self respect, they would have learned to speak English I could just adopt the old British tactic with foreigners... if at first they don't understand you just keep speaking louder and louder until they do.
