I've lost 2 large pine trees. One fell back and away from the cars but the other caused damage to my prized rock wall and steps. It's a mess out there but at least the house has spared so far. Ths wind noise is tremendous and electricity is intermittent.
I can hear trees coming down in the distance, this is everything that they said it was.

BTW, anyone see that crane collapse on TV? It's right near Carnegie Hall. They keep showing pictures of it swinging back and forth.

If you came through it with electricity, you are doing pretty well. Glad you are OK.

I watched the coverage on Nightline. Fascinating stuff. Amazing how many people chose to ignore the "mandatory" evacuation orders. Stay safe, everyone......

Cable TV & Internet access was restored this morning -- it was out for less than 12 hours. Surprised Time Warner was able to get it back online so quickly.

I have actually heard idiots who wanted to stay put right on the coast in a Cat 3 "just for the experience". Believe me, the novelty wears off in 5 minutes and the rest is misery.

Commuter trains are still suspended -- good thing, given this view of the tracks near The Hudson River

Some 12" pipe, floor jacks, planks, chain and a comealong, you could have that boat off the tracks in an hour without damaging the tracks or the hull.

We were in NYC for New Years Eve one year and we wondered how they would ever clean up the mess. The workers came out after midnight and by sun up the mess was gone - not a trace. I suspect some of these same guys are back at it today. The subway with the salt water - time will tell.

The subway with the salt water - time will tell. Absolutely. Just heard yet another press conference where it sounds like it won't be back before Sunday. In some stations, the water has flooded above the platform; there is at least one station where the water is at CEILING level. Buses resume today at 5PM with a limited schedule.

Did you lose your power in the end Beeb? Nope, never did, thankfully. However, based on the e - mails I've been getting, a number of my co-workers were not quite so lucky. Just a handful of us are available to WFH online today.

After Katrina, I ran into an old lady who was a neighbor growing up and on my paper route. She owned a refinery and barge terminal in Venice, Louisiana (way down in the delta almost to the mouth of the Mississippi). She told me she flew over the week after the storm and not only saw not a trace of the refinery but didn't even recognize the shape of the river there anymore. Total destruction.

The only dumb part was berthing the boat so the ladder is right above the third rail.
Edited: On the plus side it would seem he found an extension cord and a plug-in nearby.

It's really "A Tale Of Two Cities" here in NYC -- I have shelter, electricity, water, etc. Others don't. Even in Manhattan, there are The Haves (the people who live uptown) and The Have-Nots (The Downtowners). Limited Subway service is slowly starting to return as of tomorrow morning, but that doesn't help me because the train that gets me into Manhattan is only running through parts of The BK. Hopefully they'll get it working before the conclusion of the weekend.

I ran some neighbors to the airport yesterday morning. They called me when they got to Vegas and said they talk to a bunch of linemen who were flying from Austin to Philly to work on power lines in Jersey. The last big blow here had linemen from Oklahoma and Kansas for weeks.
Restoring electricity is tough because there are so many miles of line and you can't get the bucket trucks in until the roads are clear. BTW, if you are handy with wiring, you can turn off your main breaker (or pull the meter) and backside a cheap gasoline genset into the panel. It won't have enough juice to run electric heat or AC but if you have gas or oil heat, it will run the fans, lights, refrigerator etc. $400 and 2 gallons of gas a night can make a big difference.
