This should result in a few days of panic coverage by the Weather Channel when endless repeats for the next few years.

This weekend, I'm doing the only thing a man can do under these circumstances -- I'm attending WhiskyFest Weekend 2012 in NYC. After that, I'll be too hungover to think about what to do. The worst is supposed to hit Monday & Tuesday, so if they shut down the subways as they did for Irene last year, then I'll just do a WFH those days.

I hate to say this but it is going to be in the 80's and sunny here today. All of you on the east coast, please be careful.

Beeb, stock up on mind altering substances and stay safe.
I'll have to admit, I can't quite get my head around a cold weather hurricane. Here the season is short but nasty. The electric is out for a week and it is sultry and hot with swarms of mosquitos. The northeast will have the same howling winds and torrents of rain, then freeze your ass off...maybe not many mosquitos. I saw on the news that NYC mass transit closes at 7PM. The mass transit seems to be the heartbeat of the city so I guess that makes everyone hive up at home.
Good luck.

I'm still recovering from all of the mind altering substances I imbibed at the close of WhiskyFest Weekend last night, so I'm not looking forward to any more today. Yeah, they're closing down the subways early tonight, so I guess I'll be staying home this afternoon, which is probably for the best. In addition to announcing the subway shutdown, they have also announced mandatory evacuations on the coastal areas of Brooklyn & Queens; I'm further inland, so it'll be a while before my zone gets announced, if at all.

If the storm is moving north, usually the bad side is the east side. The worst case for NYC would be for it to stay at sea and make landfall in northern NJ or Staten Island moving east to west at high tide. The city would get the nasty back side with a bitch of a storm surge.

The daughter is closed up in her apartment, she is on the weak side of the storm, but she has not so fond memories of the hurricane that hit earlier in the summer in southern Virginiaand they had no electricity for a week.

My entire team is WFH today, at least while we all have electricity & Internet access. Between no NYC Subway service and a shutdown of NJ Transit, I doubt anyone is physically in the office.

Suggestion: Put your refrigerated items in an ice chest and have a non-electric way to cook. (Gas, propane, Coleman stove etc.) The electric usually goes when the wind hits 75-80 MPH. Hope you don't need it but better to be prepared than not. A few candles, Coleman lanterns, oil lamps or whatever are a good idea too.

Yeah, but I'm sure all of that stuff is gone by now. There were long lines in the supermarkets yesterday and in some areas, long lines just to get *in* to the supermarkets.

A friend of my wife just sent her a picture of Red Hook Brooklyn, looks like some flooding already like a seawall had been over topped. Not a good sign at this stage of the game.

Make sure you have gas in your car. Not to drive anywhere, but it may be your only source of electricity if you don't have a generator. That way you can still charge up your cell phones, etc.

Actually, I forgot to update the thread -- just found out from my friend working at the dry cleaner across the street that he hasn't been around because he was arrested. His sometimes-live-in girlfriend accused him of raping her.
BTW, anyone see that crane collapse on TV? It's right near Carnegie Hall.

Edited to add: Tappan Zee bridge closed at 4PM
East River Bridges remain open for now.

Decent price, awesome location. Of course, the rooms were so small that you had to step out into the hall to ch-ch-change your mind, but as they say elsewhere, how much time do you spend in your room?
