I admit it, I am hopelessly out of the loop on current music. The last time I was up to speed, "Classic Rock" wasn't even classic yet. I was born in 1958 and cut my musical teeth in the 70s, so my faves, back in "the day", were ELO, The Ramones, Elvis Costello, Alan Parsons Project, and of course The Beatles.
So, given my past transgressions, who are the good new artists that I should be checking out? What am I missing? Any recommendations? Thanks!.....Jake

Hmmm, Jake, I'm not sure in what direction your current taste may lie, but from the old music you like, here is some you might enjoy now. Some good jam music is Moe, Blues Traveler, Sublime, Sister Hazel, Hoobastank. Is a little more independant and very laid back. Good for conversation, your cigar and a good drink. A little more rock-like/alternative is Audioslave, Evanescense, Incubus, Maroon 5, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Your new punk isn't nearly so hard as the Ramones. Is more punk-lite, but I enjoy Green Day, Jet, The White Stripes. The weird but good (in my depraved little mind) and makes some political and societal statements is Eminem, Marilyn Manson, Disturbed . My favs linger on as Joplin, Buffett (I know is cliche, but I love the lifestyle he sings ), Dave Matthews, Train, the Dead, etc. It just really depends on the mood I'm in on a given day. There is good music out there. You just have to look and listen. I do like some country, some rap, but my curse is POP. Keep Britney, Justin, and their ilk away! Deborah

There is good music out there. You just have to look and listen. I do like some country, some rap, but my curse is POP. Keep Britney, Justin, and their ilk away! Deborah YEAH! WHAT SHE SAID! Also, Beastie Boys and the Eagles! On reading the beginning of this post, a had already planned on being 'out there' and suggesting Eminim and Marilyn Manson - Eminim just because he is so fucking (I almost put stars but remembered where I was that I can say FUCK) good, and Marilyn just 'cause (see below). And Rage Against the Machine and that skinny little white boy with the long blond hair that was banging Pam Anderson for a while. One by one to follow (may be a long post, are any of you surprised?) Eminem: pure genious. listen and learn. Marilyn Manson: What can you say? We liked Alice Cooper. My son (at 13) insisted on being at the concert to be held on Halloween at Convention Center in Asbury Park, NJ. "Mom, you're not coming with us!!!", but as a good Mom, I DID go, and brought a friend. As we're going up and down the streets looking for a place to park (and incidentally in the neighborhood where he was conceived, born, and raised for 2 years), we saw all sort of freaks converging on Convention Hall. He says "Mom, you're coming with us, right?" Hah! He needs me! So we park and I corral all of these pre-pubescent boys and get on line along the Asbury Park boardwalk, which is considerable, being as how there was a bomb threat. In front of us was a hugely overweight young man dressed in a miniskirt, net hose, calmly painting his fingers black. My boy, at that moment - I think- realized that he was indeed NOT like these people. Also, for the evening's entertainment, Marilyn was scheduled to kill himself onstage at midnight Halloween. Oh. We eventually got in (after passing metal detectors - near which was a table piled high with all sorts of leashes, collars, studs, etc) I was actually a GREAT concert! Scared the shit out of my boy, but in a good way! Joplin, forever!!!!I absolutely love that chick! Summertime!!!!!!!! Buffet! You need to ask?

Hey Irish!!
You know, I had a friend that bought us tickets for Manson in Atlanta. I was hyped as hell 8-)to be able to dress up and go to that, but you what happened? Damned if it wasn't on December 4th, the day we flew into Hedo. Sorry, but no go!! Ah well, he sold them on Ebay and went to the SEC championship instead.
Good to see you!

If you really want to have some fun, check out the Reggae re-make of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon by the Easy All Stars which was released a couple of years ago. It's now called "Dub Side of the Moon." HedoCanucks had it in December playing at Delroys. Very Cool! www.easystar.com/dubfeatures1.html

I am currently ADDICTED to a group called "Me First and the Gimme Gimmes". they are basically a buch of punk rockers from other bands that get together and do punk versions of other songs, songs like "Sloop John B", or "Stand By Your Man", or "Don't Cry For Me Argentina". They've evidently been around for years, but I just heard them about a month ago. Personally, I don't think I would recommend them though. They really appear to be a love them or hate them sort of band. www.gimmegimmes.com (official site) www.fatwreck.com/records.php3?sd=Pupd6NHRMXIAAFxpXuU&recordsort=ME1 (label site, with some mp3s) Zilla

Mikey I have a friend who is a guitarist in KISSNATION, a Kiss tribute band I saw just the other night. A couple of guys who are in Z02 used to be in that band, and they were awesome. Z02 also played at Arlene's Grocery during a rock 'n' roll karaoke, where you get handed a sheet of lyrics and the band rocks out behind you. Yes, I wrote about that, too: paulkatcher.com/archives/000427.shtmlI agree with upsman, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see this band make it big. People often ask me what to do in NYC. On Monday night, head to Arlene's for a truly unique experience.

Thanks Jake, good to be here. Thanks for having me. Paul, how ya doin man Chris as of right now, nothing for Philly but it's still early in the year.As a matter of fact, The crew finds out usually thru www.Twistedsister.com . they post the dates, then we get a phone call later. I was just notified that T.S. has been added to the Tsunami relief show in Orlando fl. Feb.5th. Aerosmith, Cheap Trick are among the many acts. Each band has 15-20 minutes of stage time. I think I am going to skip that one. Mikey

If I can't sing it, I don't listen to it...and I HAVE been singing a lot (got an MP3 attachment to my car's tape player...I have rediscovered singing while driving...) Like you, I am starting to wonder exactly what's out there these days...Not into Rap or Hip-Hop...I'l always be a Jimmy Buffet fan, as well as Billy Joel and Elton John....I started listening to a couple of these "American Idol" guys...what's his name..Clay Aiken? Good voice... I'll be interested to read some of youse guys's suggestions danimal

There ain't no good music these days. "Artists" fake it all and are too hell-bent on making money rather than putting out good songs.
Rhonda and I "chapparoned" someones 15 yr old daughter at a concert awhile back featuring "Garbage" and another forgettable group whose name I forgot.......I could see people on stage with instruments but no melody found its way to my ears, only gut-renching noise.
I'm sure I lost more hearing that night.
I remember the time I sang on stage with "The Letterman" many years ago in Charlotte, NC. Now THAT was music!! ;D

Well sure, if you are going to judge all new music on the music being produced for the bubblegum crowd, it IS all gonna sound like crap. Jake and Danimal, if you like music you can sing to, I recommend "the Magnetic Fields - I", "Poe - Haunted" or anything by Michael Feinstein (my favorite is "Michael & George: Feinstein Sings Gershwin") I just thought about my recommends on this thread. Between the artists above, and the Gimme Gimmes.....if any of you decide to check them all out, hopefully you are as schizophrenic musically as I am. I like most of it (except exceptionally violent rap, and german opera....lord keep me safe from Wagner fans) Zilla

I don't even consider that music. Right now I'm writing my OWN anti-rap, rap-song...so far I've got: Well, I be doin' da rap as you can plainly see, cuz' I'm just too lazy to think of REAL poetry, I try to be relevant, I try to be slick, Then I go and spoil it all by talkin' 'bout my d*ck... ...see what happens when I'm deprived of Hedo?

I've started buying concert and documentary music DVD's and have found it's a great way of re-enjoying music that I haven't thought about for awhile or music that I constantly love. Nothing like adding the visual to the aural........I guess that's why I can't stand having sex in the dark There's some great small venue tunes in Steely Dan "Two Against Nature", the Stones set from last year (4 flicks?) is great for seeing how they play in different types of venues (small, arena, stadium). Just picked up a great Elton John in New York one. And there are the ones that are "the making of" type of documentary DVD's for some classics......not bad ones for Dark Side of the Moon, Aja, Machine Head..... To get on topic........I guess I don't know what the good new music is. I tend to seek out new or different or live versions of the old stuff. But, I *did* really enjoy a slow rap tune by that well known guy who died...Tupac, I think.......depressing commentary on the bleak urban existence that some people are living. "Life Goes On" is the name, I think....has some great female background vocals which seems to be unusual for rap. But, I'm not an expert on that HedoCanuxxx

Danimal's Musical Oddessy update--(a.k.a--an old fart tries to stay hip) Well, so far I've tried Usher, Christine Aguilera and Beyonce...but nothing really 'spoke' to me. Oh, they can sing, but nothing was really 'catchy'...I only liked one song I found...Alan Jackson doing 'margaritaville.' I'll keep looking... danimal
