Okay, so I'm browsing through the local Tower Records today, and Pat Benatar's greatest hits album catches my eye. I scan through the list of songs.... "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Heartbreaker", "Fire and Ice", "Love is a Battlefield", etc. And I'm thinking, where the fuck is "I Love Rock and Roll"?? Surely that qualifies as one of her best, or at least biggest, hits? Weird Al even parodied it! I frantically scan through all her other albums, but can't find it anywhere!
When I get home, of course, a quick Google search confirms my stupidity: ILR&R is by Joan Jett, not Patty B. Duh! (Don't worry, I've already been suitably chastised by the Princess).
So, my question is: do any of the rest of youse guys have trouble telling these two chicks apart? Both short, brunette, no-holds-barred rock-and-rolling babes from my college days? Please, tell me I'm not the only one confused!.....Jake
P.S. - If you DON'T get them confused, which do you like better?

If they are on the radio, I can't tell the difference. Personally I like both of them. Joe.

Ya can't tell the difference!!! Pat's range of octaves is definitely much broader than Joan's. Pat can hit much higher notes than Joan (having been trained as an opera singer before she decided she wanted to be a rocker chick).

I can't tell the difference between most singers unless their voice has a definite different sound to it. Thats why I like music videos, at least I can see who's singing. Joe.

Pat Benatar gets my vote, and I'm with DT here, Chrissie Hynde is definately worthy of a mention.

Pat gets my vote but do enjoy Joan, also. (At least the afore mentioned song) As for the two sounding alike, many get them confused. I think it is due to the fact that they are from the same generation. In all honesty, I can't name any other tune by Joan Jett beside I Love Rock & Roll.

....In all honesty, I can't name any other tune by Joan Jett beside I Love Rock & Roll. .... Hey, DJ, good to see you back. Only other original JJ song I can think of is "Bad Reputation", along with several covers like "Crimson and Clover". Dayem, DT - those looooong URLs are fucking up my screen!.....Jake

I like Pat better, too. But my fave cover by Joan Jett is "Dirty Deeds". Yeah, baby! BTW, gotta agree ... that long URL is making it hard to read this thread.

I think P.B. has just a little more of the "sexy" thing going on. Better vocal range by far. Believe it or not Hazelita, I actuallly knew that fact about her being professionally trained for Opera. I believe it was by her mother wasn't it, as she was an opera singer too? Or was that just some bad weed in the late seventies that makes me remember that. Amy Lee from Evanesence is also Clasically trained, but you'd never know it from listening to her.
Oh shit, speaking of bad weed in the late seventies, I just had a flashback that reminded me that I used to have this magazine picture of P.B. under my mattress. (Give me a break, I was seventeen at the time). Pat was in a tight, white muscle shirt, and was braless. Airconditioning on FULL! Full lips, bright red lipstick. Ok, now I remember why I liked P.B. more. I don't know why, but my wrist starts to ache whenever I think of that..............
I always thought that Joan Jett was a little manlly. Don't know why.

PB always seemed to me to try and act as rebel as JJ was. Like a goodie girl trying to "be bad", whereas, JJ was the girl from the wrong side of the tracks and really didn't give a shit about the "goodie girl" thing.
Buttt that was just me and yes, that was a high school thing too, having come from the proverbial wrong side of the tracks, myslef, I guess I felt that affinity.

Agrees with HB. Pat no doubt has the best voice of the two. But Joan puts more rock in the rockin roll

My confusion continues. Heard a great rockin' chick-voiced anthem that I hadn't heard in years: "Goodbye To You!" I figured it had to be either Joan or Pat. Nope. It was "Scandal" featuring Patty Smyth (not to be confused with Patti Smith of "Because the Night" fame).....Jake
Could I have loved someone like the one I see in you I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too These last few weeks of holding on The days are dull, the nights are long Guess it's better to say
Goodbye to you Goodbye to you Goodbye to you Goodbye to you

That's one of my fave songs by Scandal. I have been able to relate to it many times in my life. Plus, Patty Smyth is too cute!
Patti Smith (of the hairy armpits -- eewww) is very scary but the only song of hers I can remember is "Because the Night". It's much better than the cover version by Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs.
