I roll into the office this morning and check out the headlines first thing and this is what I see:
Reports: 37 people shot in Chicago since Friday Lion reportedly on the loose near British village Pussy Riot says two members flee Russia 17 beheaded after 'music party' in Afghanistan
And Hurricane Isaac is bearing down on my New Orleans.
WTF was in the Kool-Aid this weekend?

Keep your fingers crossed for the Big Easy. May the levees hold.
How was your trip?
Simon should not have let the lion loose.

Simon IS the lion
Edited: ... or is this a euphemism for Prince Harry's photos.

Most of the shootings in Chicago are gang vs. gang members. So I don't count those as crimes. More like the universe cleansing itself.
As for the lion, I have it on good authority that it sleeps tonight.

It is true that Chicago shootings are mostly gang related. I can tell you that most of the shootings in Afghanistan are the same. That country and it's warlords have been at it for decades. I highly recommend a book I read recently called SIKANDER. I learned tons about the waring factions in Afghanistan and the creation of the Taliban needed to tame the regional gangs that were killing each other. It covers everyday life and important events beginning with the Soviet occupation though 21 years of strife in that poor country through the events of one young man. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003X4KWE4/ref=docs-os-doi_0

Gee, I guess this makes the Empire State Building shooting on Friday pale in comparison. Although I must admit, living in Brooklyn, whenever I hear popping noises that may or may NOT be fireworks, I do have a tendency to hit the deck immediately. Yeah, a lot of gang shootings here, too, but also, lots of stray gunshot deaths as well. Edited to add the following for 2011 stats: More Than A Third Of 2011 NYC Murders Took Place In Brooklyn (And Other Interesting Stats)

The Empire State Building shooting sounds like the NYC cops need some time on the rifle range. I know that it is a tough job being a cop there but it sounded like many of the injuries were from police weapons.

I wouldn't necessarily disagree with you but I think when you keep in mind that the streets were crowded at the time (9AM), there was probably bound to be some collateral damage caught in the crossfire.

Lion reportedly on the loose near British village The escaped 'lion' was actually about 5 miles away from me. However, it turned out to be a cat

That isn't surprising. Isn't that where all the cops live?

Yes it is. And that's where all of the landfills live, too.

There's supposed to be a Grand Jury investigation on the NYPD response; if there's an internal audit, we'll likely never learn the truth, but if there's an independent forensics company hired, there's at least a chance that we *may* learn the truth.

Sounding like this was intended to be a "suicide by police fire"... collateral damage indicates that pulling a Kevorkian would have been much cleaner.

On the morning of the shooting, that guy gave his apartment keys to the building's superintendent when he left the building and told him he didn't need them anymore because he wouldn't be back.

New Orleans high tide (Chef Menteur, Lake Ponchartrain) was 1:16PM and is falling and the next high tide is tomorrow afternoon, so with the storm blowing in at Category 1 this evening , I would not think the storm surge to be too bad. Anyway, Obama can lower the sea level, so not to worry.

With all the hot air blowing across the gulf from Tampa right about now, I'm surprised it didn't hit NO at Cat 5.
