Got done with my contract for the year about 3 weeks ago. Everything turned in and accepted, so I am in semi-retirement mode until the July 1st when the new fiscal year starts.
Summertime projects-
1) Bought a convertor so that I can plug the old VCR into a USB port. Going through all the old VHS tapes that are around and converting them to DVD's. Top priority are all the old homemade tapes of the family, some of those are over 25 years old now. Then I will convert any old movies that lying around and worthy of keeping.
2) Firewood for winter 2013-14 has been bought and stacked.
3) The encroaching wilderness.. its been about 15 years since I did anything about this. Every year the trees and scrubs encroach into the area of civilization that I have carved out. For the past 3 weeks I have been regaining my upper body strength by cutting down just about everything in a 10-15 foot wide swath around the house and down the parkway (excuse me, the driveway). That task is just about done. I have netted some firewood out of the project. That has to be split and stacked. I think I am now good for fuel until about Jan 2015.
4) Complete the deck. One segment to go at the far end of the house, and a short walkway.
5) Interior remodeling

Why not just copy everything to a media server so you don't have all those loose discs laying around?

I have a list of summer projects as well, including sitting down with my snapshot scanner and scanning in decades worth of 4x6 prints. That should free up many shoe-boxes worth of closet space.

You forget to whom you speak. Remember that I am hamstrung by satellite internet access. While faster than dialup, I am bandwidth limited. One 1/2 hour video would essentially use up my upload limits for a week (1Gb) and take about 2 days to upload. Even if that were not the case, I am not sold on the cloud as a long term storage option (just waiting for one of those companies to go belly up and watch the ensuing panic). While DVD videos may not be the media of choice in 25 years, my heirs should still be able to reload the files on whatever is contemporary to the time. I should be too senile to care. I will be making non-DVD video format disks backing up the raw files also.

Nice follow up
1) I DID buy the converter, and even managed to upload several VCR's (3 or 4, I dont remember, the VCR and the pile of tapes are still sitting there and the done/to do piles have been sufficently mixed up so as to be indistinguishable) to the hard drive, but never took it past that point.
2) was already taken care of on Jun 4
3) was almost done on June 4, there are still a couple trees that need to come down because we thought they would be better to do in the fall when it wasnt so hot outside
4) I did get that taken care of
5) Didnt get that far yet.
OK so the question is, WHY was I busy all summer, even after I started back to working on July 1, and didnt get more done?

You know if you would stop throwing that rock on ice and get your nose to the grind stone you might just accomplish something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D

Hey, there's an idea -- instead of putting his nose to the grindstone, he should use his nose to push the rock across the ice. Sounds like we've got the makings of a brand new game here: Nasal Curling.

Yeah that all sounds good... until the nose hairs get in the way.

No, no, you could alternatively use them to sweep the stone down the ice.

Just think if the ice wasn't slippery enough you could blow a snot rocket to help improve the movement.

Put it this way -- they should start preparing your wing in The Curling Hall Of Fame immediately, if not sooner.

Maybe the next time you go off curling we should run an ad on Craigslist for "Free Firewood" at your place.

Thought I would drop by and say HELLO! I've been busy with summer projects. I've helped build a closet, I've done a lot of painting and I demoed the old hardwood floor in the house so the new one could be put in. I am currently spaculing a guest bedroom with over a hundred holes in it...(most of them are small pin holes from years of teenage posters) but one is massive and I may have to cut out the busted pieces. I could easily strangle the guy who did it. Oh, did I mention we still need to repaint the pool? <Big sigh> life is busy!

I love to spackle holes. Just tell me when and where to show up with my spackling compound. I find it very therapeutic.

The trick is to drag the compound with your blade across the hole at an angle. You get a smoother finish that way. And on the larger holes build the compound up gradually. Don't go for a complete fill on the first pass.
I learned this many years ago from Harvey Korman.
