Pancreatic cancer is a tough opponent to beat. "Luciano Pavarotti died one hour ago," Robson said in a telephone text message to Reuters. He was 71. The rotund, black-bearded tenor known as "Big Luciano" helped bring opera to the masses and performed to vast stadium audiences round the world. He shot to fame with a stand-in appearance at London's Covent Garden in 1963 and had soon had critics gushing about his voluminous voice. In July 2006, Pavarotti underwent surgery in New York for pancreatic cancer and retreated to his villa in Modena. He had to cancel his first planned public reappearance a few months later. news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070906/ts_nm/pavarotti_health_dc_10P.S. - no, Joseph, he wasn't on my list.

I woke up to this news this morning. It's very sad. Pavarotti's version of Puccini's Nessun Dorma was chosen as the anthem for the 1990 World Cup Finals in Italy (Italia '90) and brought opera to the masses. It was an emotive tournament for England as we should have won it, and came so close to a place in the final that many can still vividly remember the sense of despair we felt all those years ago when we were so cruelly knocked out by Germany in a penalty shoot-out in the semi-final. Whenever I am reminded of Italia '90 Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma always plays in my head.
