This weekend I took a road trip to visit our daughter at school in New York's "North Country". On the way home I took Rt.9 instead of the North Way- NYS Thruway. I had a very pleasant surprise by seeing extremely beautiful snow capped mountains, streams and quaint small towns. One thing that stood out however was the vast amount of abandoned roadside motels. Before the completion of the high speed NYS Thruway, Route 9 was the main road connecting downstate and upstate NY. I'm guessing the old meandering scenic road became obsolete and that was the end of this industry. Such a shame, they seemed countless in number and although the Thruway is scenic too, Route 9 captures a slower pace in time. I have to drive this again. I have a few pictures to share, this first sign says "Cabins and Showers".

That El Camino would sell for a good chunk of ch-ch-change out here.

Joe, it has some rust but it's not in bad overall condition. It's a 6 cylinder with a 3-speed column shift.
"$800 Firm" is written on the window.

Some warm and friendly locals kindly offered advice on local history, bed and breakfasts, directions and dining and wine pairings.

Some warm and friendly locals who kindly offered advice on local history, bed and breakfasts, directions and dining and wine pairings. They may know local history but I would not drink any wine that those two recommended.

I'll call and get more details about the car. A flatbed truck to get it won't be cheap, it's 250 miles from here.

They said to call back, the owner is at the doctors. I'll follow through later.

Another abandoned motel. I also have a great mango salsa recipe if anyone is interested.

A main office at a family motel. I bet a lot of children were conceived in these places.

Nice pictures Gaz. A part of American culture that sadly looks like it has had its day.

These places seem to thrive in Austin. The Bluebonnet Courts pictured has been around since the 1920s. Attachments:

It's am original one owner car, the grandson is selling it for his grandfather.Tje biggest single issue is a severely rusted frame but he can get one for $700. Je also has a bodyshop that cam swap frames. Thos sounds potentially expensive. Car hasn't neen started in 5 years but ran fine then.

Nice Tex, we still have a few survivors. Last year Geri and I stayed at one and we froze! Mistakenly, the heat wasn't turned on for the season yet and it snowed, it was Mothers Day.
