Watched a recent episode of Hawaii 5-O the other day, and who should show up as an old, cranky, wrinkly, recently-released-from-the-slammer diamond smuggler, but our old buddy Ed Asner. Always good for a laugh, right?
But it was more than that. The 5-O dudes go to their super-duper computer-screen desk, and show some old pics of the character when he was younger, meaner, and far more dangerous. My first thought was, well sure, Ed has been acting for a long time. They dug up some old photos of some old show he was in back in the day.
But then, something clicked in my brain: was it possible that Ed Asner was in an original 5-O episode? A quick launch of the IMDb app on my Android answered the question: Asner appeared on the original series, and played a character with the same name: August March (a pretty cute character name, I might add). I don't remember ever seeing that episode, but apparently some producer or writer did!
Anyway, I thought that was pretty damn clever!........Jake

I enjoyed that episode also, and thought it pretty clever how they worked it so that elements from the clips (especially some very specific props) from the original appeared in the recent. High praise from me for this work, and doing a little historical tweek so that it was McGarrit's father who dealt with August March in the original 30 years ago.... sort of an alternative timeline. And if it wasnt obvious from the end of the show Asner is under contract and will appear in future episodes

Aha! I didn't know about that spoiler data. But it certainly makes sense from the last scene.
