I'm preparing for a "Show and Go" for later on this spring. A trick I used while drag racing Geri's Mustang years ago was to run a shorter tire, this effectively yields a lower final drive. Here I'm trying to lower the final drive of the mild 3:23 ratio intalled in this 1965 GTO. By adding this extremely short tire of 22 inches, I'm getting a drag race friendly 3:90. Check out this calculator (if you're a car guy this is cool, so bear with me!) www.summitracing.com/expertadvice/storydetail/calcsandtools/Gear-Ratio-Calculator/

I had a 1960 Vette with a Z28 engine, Holley 850 double pumper (maybe over carbed a bit), headers, Mallory dual point ignition, Hurst shifter, monster clutch, and a 4.11 positrac rear end.
I was beaten in the quarter just once. A guy had a shitty looking 51 Pontiac with some monster engine and a 5.38 rear end. Got suckered in and lost $10. Live and learn. Set up the rear end depending on whether you want low end or high end performance IMHO.

My dad's old Corvair would be breathing exhaust against those.

Another effective free horsepower trick is to use thinner oil. Basically it let's ths engine spin with less resistance.
Even Corvairs would benefit.

When I was 12, I raced Honda 50 and Honda 90 motorbikes.
Overinflate the tires, take out 1/3 of the oil, lube the hell out of the chain, remove the baffle from the muffler - there's a lot of tricks if money is riding on it. Taking off the air filter for short intervals adds HP too, but don't ride through a sandstorm. Advancing the timing a little helps too.

Yes, I ran front tires at 50 psi and only 4 quarts of oil. All free power and my friends had Honda 50 & 70s. I never had a minibike just a pair of good walking sneakers. My mother kept it that way.
