I was talking with my daughter last night and she mentioned that she had just finished reading the book and is going to the movie tonight.
Her summary of the book.. "After the Twilight series, The Hunger Games gives me hope that today's teens may have intelligence after all." She also commented on the very strong aspects of the female protagonist compare to other recent books geared toward the younger readers.
Edited: She said that the movie was well worth the standing in line an hour to see it. Personally, no movie is that good, but she is picky about handing out praise. I will probably NOT see it in the theater, but will watch it on PPV.

It did a record $155 million at the Box Office last weekend. Apparently, you're not a teenage girl.

Watched this movie tonight on Netflix DVD by mail (not doing the streaming thing just yet).
I thought it was pretty good! I didn't expect to like it, believing that it was aimed at the YA market. But it was actually a pretty good movie for any audience, and very well done.
And yes, it was clearly an anti-big-government story. My understanding is that the books are a trilogy, and this was the first movie of three. It definitely sets up a situation where a downtrodden society might find a way to throw off the shackles imposed on them by an oppressive government. I grok! I feel the same way about our current federal regime.

We enjoyed the movie also, and ended up listening to the books on audio. The movie follows the first book virtually word for word. There is a bit of back story that can be found in the reading, and some ambiguous moments in the movie explained, but otherwise the movie is what you find in the book.
Read (listened to) books 2 and three after that, it carries on in a logical progression as you might expect, with some important surprises at the end. Power corrupts, and the "devil you know" come to mind.
