This past January (2012), the traditional incandescent light bulb has been banned in the Unites States, but only in the 100 Watt size. Next January, the 75 Watt gets the axe, and in January 2014, the 60 Watt and 40 Watters are goners.
I have three reactions to this: First and foremost, RAGE at an out-of-control nanny-state that thinks it has the right to micromanage our lives. Second, more rage: at voters who let pinhead politicians do something like this.
But my third reaction is more practical: stock up! I went to Home Depot yesterday and bought an armload of 100 Watt bulbs. The stores aren't out of them yet. They aren't illegal to sell or to use (yet), just to manufacture or import. Allah only knows how long it will take them to sell out the current stock.
So if you are like me, and HATE CFL bulbs, get out there and shop!
And keep an eye on those pinhead nanny-state politicians, as they take away one freedom after another. FUCKERS!!!!

My fingers are crossed for LED technology to actually be viable soon... it will make it all a moot point. However I am still pissed about Big Brother telling me what products I can purchase and use.

I am OK with the CFLs for many applications, but prefer incandescent for reading or outside tool closets, garages etc where the bulbs are apt to be on for a couple minutes only and the CFLs don't have time to warm up. We put some expensive LEDs in our bedroom which were rated at 10,000 hour lives - most didn't go 100. They will work out the LEDs but they aren't there yet.
Looks like the market could sort this out to me. JMHO.0

Politicians are masters at ignoring unintended consequences. I'll bet none of them have ever heard of the Jevons Paradox. Briefly,

The government doesn't pay for anything. We do.

Republican’s tried to reverse the ban late last year. They kind of won. The Republican controlled Congress passed a new bill reversing the ban but the bill was DOA in the democratically controlled Senate. So instead Congress simply didn't fund the enforcement of the ban. If we see a reversal of control in the House then we might also see a real ban on the bulbs.
It is simply stupid stuff. Let the market decide for crying out loud. In the meantime I stocked up last summer on the 100 watt'ers.

Heard on the Radio today...That there are now two Companys making the incandesent light bulb..made here in the USA and sold here in the USA..The hitch is..These new Bulbs fall into the servere duty bulb..which means they are built to withstand some punishment...The standard everyday light bulb is being fazed out

BUMP!!!!! The temporary ban on enforcing the ban has expired, and the nanny state is back in full swing as of this past October 1. The 75 watt bulbs become illegal in January 2013; time to stock up! Might as well get some 60 watters while you're at it.

Time to go to Home Depot. That's where I went. I figure I've got about five years worth of "real" light bulbs stashed in my closet. That should last me until LED bulbs are reasonably priced, or until our government collapses under its own stupidity, like Greece. Whichever comes first. ETA: I'm kinda hoping for the latter.
