This week in my movie class, we saw the action-adventure flick " Act Of Valor" starring actual active-duty Navy SEALs. For the review, please click here.

Very interesting. I happen to see an interview today on TV with producers including Mouse about this movie. He said that initially they were going to use actors but approached the Navy Seals to be in the movie but the Seals declined saying they were not actors. He claimed that they talked the Seals into doing the movie by telling them that this was their chance to show the world who they really are and what really goes on. They said the movie took 4 years to shoot because they had to schedule when the Seals were not in training or on deployment. They also talked about the Seals families saying that the wives are the real heroes sometimes living without their husbands for 10-11 months at a time not knowing what danger they are in. I would like to see this and will look for this on demand.
I remember reading two or three books many years back about one of the early Navy Seal Richard Marcinko. He was the first Commanding Officer of SEAL Team Six and Red Cell. His books that told the story were compelling and demonstrated an unbelievable dedication to our country.

During their interview in my movie class, the two directors hit on many of the points you mention, including the fact that they used live ammo in the action scenes (I assume they mean only in those shots when they weren't actually shooting at live actors). Additionally, they mentioned that instead of writing a fictional script about the SEALs, they decided to take the remarkable stories that they were told when interviewing the SEALs and create a screenplay around those incidents.

Went to see this tonight... TWO THUMBS WAY UP!!
I went in knowing it wasn't professional actors and expected the acting to be a little stiff... but the action scenes were more than enough to make up for it. It was pretty obvious when they were using live ammo, which really made things intense. I loved the first person feel to lots of the action scenes.
