Of the 9 movies nominated for Best Picture this year, I saw 7 -- missed "Tree of Life" & "Extremely Loud". Four of the 9 I saw in my movie class last semester -- "The Artist", "Moneyball", "Hugo" and "War Horse". I would be hard-pressed to pick one as best; the 7 I saw certainly deserve the recognition, but I wouldn't mind if it wound up in a 3-way tie with "The Artist", "The Descendants" and "Midnight In Paris". Anyone have a pick for Best Picture? What about any of the other nominations? The list of nominees announced this morning is here: oscar.go.com/nominees

Beeb, whats your impression on the year in general? Weak or strong? Overall I get the sense that, yeah these are good movies, but collectively, not "great"

Yep, it was a pretty weak year for movies, at least as far as major studio releases were concerned, IMO. That's one of the reasons why I take my movie class -- very often, I'll see a film that's not a major studio release which would normally never even show up on my radar.
This year's list is 9 movies-- one less than what they had previously, but still probably about four too many. Are any of these "great" in the sense that they may wind up as a classic and still referenced a decade from now? Maybe not. It's kind of gotten like The Baseball Hall Of Fame -- its members have gone from a handful of a few really great players to a collection of very good players.

Nine? I thought it was five. But then, I know about as much about the academy awards as I do about sports. And have about as much interest in them.

I have only seen one of them "Moneyball".

This year, a major fail by the nominating committee was the omission of "Drive" -- at least for Albert Brooks as Best Supporting Actor. He got a Golden Globe nomination and many people who saw the movie (I did not) said that they were both surprised and impressed by his non-comedic acting in the role of a tough guy.

You didn't miss anything when you missed Tree of Life.
