Saw this on PPV last night. I can see the "Spielberg" moments in this movie, but to me they in no way detract from the homage that Scorsese pays to the film pioneers in this movie. Even "pioneers" is too civilized of a term for the time frame he is celebrating... this is a tribute to the Lewis and Clark's of the first generation of film creation, the generation that was pretty much lost to history when their works of celluloid disintegrated in their tins.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and every little twist and turn Martin presented during the two plus hours.
Another aspect of this movie needs to be addressed. I have found during the past six months or so that I could very easily belong (were I a few decades younger) to the subculture called "Steampunk". If you google that term you will find many sources of background information.
In this case the clockwork aesthetic that this entire movie revolves around is almost pure steampunk, right down the the Inspector's glitchy leg braces (until fixed at the end).
Steampunk is much more than Victorian dressup, it is a philosophy of self-reliance and the strength that comes from technology that that can be repaired with simple tools.
That essence, at its core, is the core of Hugo... that broken things need to be repaired to work properly, and we should have that ability, and the inherent NEED, to fix those things.. whether they are mechanical, or living.
