Canadian version of a steel town. Home to Algoma Steel. Crappy restaurants, unless you like grease. Missed out on the Jake Burger at Jake's Restaurant which is a subset of Reggies Bar. It seems that they stop cooking at 4:30pm, on Saturday and 5:00pm is just too late to get a meal. Probably a good thing, as their burgers consist of 1.5 pound patties of beef, and the Jake Burger had three of the those beasts.
Curling went well, the stats team for Sunday's final game... Closest to the camera is Gerry Guerts who was my boss for this event. He runs the website www.curlingzone.com where the game results were posted. Behind him are Erin and George, who I selected to score the game, and myself in the background.
CBC televised the game nationwide in Canada, our stats were fed into their booth to assist with the commentary, just like is done on football, basketball, and other sports.
We did have a major internet glitch early into the second have of the game. The on site server went down, and we went into paper mode. After about 20 minutes the arena's connection came back and George and I played data entry while Erin and Gerry continued the scoring.
Data entry caught up with the game with about 8 stones left to play. We didnt lose a shot, and Gerry was impressed with my handling of the situation. Other than a long series of data similar to "Clockwise, guard, sweeping 2, shot score 5". that I read off to George, I have no clue what happened in the second half of the game.
Oh well, I got $500 and my meals and room comped for the week.
Best of all, I came across the border with some well purchased contraband. I bought 2 liters of Havana Club Cuban rum... IMHO the best in the world, and the only rum that I drink straight. Also, 3 bottles of Tylenol 1 (the good stuff with codeine). Its available OTC in Canada. Customs didnt ask about those purchases, so I felt no obligation to inform them of their oversight.
I did stop at the duty free shop just before crossing the bridge back into the US. Got 2 liters of Sangsters Rum Cream and a liter of Johnny Walker Double Black (which I had just read a VERY positive review about just a couples days prior). They take your license plate number, and Customs knows about your purchase before you get to them, so there is no point hiding that fact. Technically you can only bring 1 liter back into the US duty free, but I was honest to the customs guy about those 3 that I got at duty free, and he gave me a waive through on the 2 extra.
All in all, a very good crossing at the border.
I will review the JW Double Black later.
