It looks like my career of Hedo trips is over.
I got word yesterday that I had yet another basal cell carcinoma. That makes 3 in the past 6 months, and the last 2 were on my right arm. In the past they have been on my face only (yes I know, that explains a lot), but the spread to my arm has me a bit unnerved. BCC isnt fatal but I dont fancy any more elaborate surgeries than the two I have had already to treat these suckers.
The latest was completely removed by the biopsy, which is good, but I am beginning to feel like I have been under attack by a paper punch, when I am not under the surgeons knife or the Physicians Assistant's liquid nitrogen soaked cotton swab.
The Doc has given me the warning that I should put on the SPF 50 first thing in the morning, every morning, even if I dont plan on going outside. Visits to tropical sun?? Dont!
So, it was a good run, 9 trips total over 12 years. I will miss the place, I will miss renewing friendships face to face at Delroys, but will continue those here and elsewhere.

Sorry to hear that! Of course it is possible to go to Hedo and avoid the sun, but I imagine it would take a lot of work, and make you wonder why the heck you bothered in the first place.
There's still curling at least....

In the 16 years that I have been a diabetic, I often spend the last day of my Hedo vacation watching the sunset and wondering if I've made my last trip there because I'll develop some complication that will preclude me from going again. So far, I've been lucky, but my number will certainly be up soon enough.

One of the things, just one mind you, that the Hedo beach has going for it is the quantity of high quality shade. But even spending most of my time in that shade with only a few trips into the direct sun while coated with SPF50, I would usually end the week approaching a cooked lobster in tone.
The first trip or two, when I went in May with the sun directly overhead, I burnt repeatedly, regardless of the time spent in the shade. Just standing in line at the bar once would leave a nuclear glow about me. Of course the catamaran cruise was a one off deal. I spent the return half of the trip draped in towels.
Oh well, its pure genetics. My ancestors went through the natural selection process that resulted in a skin tone that got every molecule of vitamin D out of the sun that was available to them.. skin cancer anywhere else in the world was the trade off.

Sorry to hear it. I put on sunblock every morning before I go out and wear a wide brim straw hat. I'm not trying to get you signed up for rodeo but a straw summer type cowboy hat is a good sun shade.
One 83 year old buddy of mine is going to Hedo this November with dialysis equipment in his room. I dragged him up and down the steps at Ankor Wat, Cambodia last year and I give him credit for hanging in there.
Good luck.

Well, he wont have to worry about mistaking my bottle of sunscreen for vodka again.

Oh for goodness sakes!!
We regularly get asked "didn't you guys go to Jamaica? Why don't you have a tan?" We use SPF 20 million (or more, you get the picture) and rub it on each other every morning. We find a nice spot under the shade and VOILA! - each day we're set for sun and fun. It's not hard.

I'm very sorry to hear the news Gordon. Hey, maybe Bob has a good idea regarding the sun screen and shade. You could even wear a light shirt all day. Hope it all works out and we will meet again someday on the beach.

Well, like I said above, I practically live in the shade while there with spf50, and by weeks end I am pretty much cooked regardless. Better safe than dead.

Gordon my friend, I have the answer. The burkini. You'll be the envy of the nude beach (or the laughing stock...) : There's no need to thank me. I'm happy just happy to have been able to help.

Brilliant Simon... I am sure that any guy would be welcomed showing up on the nude beach in that, especially walking around with arms tucked inside.

You're welcome Gordon.
Go for a paddle at the nude beach in one and I have no doubt you'll soon be looking as happy as the chick in the middle picture.

I imagine that jumping into the pool with that on it might billow out and hold me up over the water... of course going into the hot tub, might be deadly between the trapped chlorine fumes and the currents caused by the water jets.

That could double as your pajama party costume and save some space in your suitcase.

You would certainly come in handy in the event of a raft shortage at the nude pool... just don't forget to write your dates on your burkini though.

I am sure the dive shack would be able to inflate that for me.

Simon, only problem with the burkini is that my face will still get sun exposure. I would probably need a face covering, like a mask... maybe like this one

A couple of years ago while on vacation with the family at Wildwood NJ, I watched a Muslim family play at the hotel pool. They seemed like everyone else having a good time in the water but the difference was the men and boys wore regular bathing suits and the young ladies and women swam completely covered up just like in Simons pictures. Only their faces were exposed and when they had water goggles on you could just see their lips.
