Thanks for all your birthday wishes. I've decided not to let the rioters spoil my day and have come into London for dinner at my favourite restaurant the Texas Embassy.

www.texasembassy.com/foods.htmlThe menu looks good but I think they've got a helluva nerve to charge $5 to refill your chips & salsa. Tex-Mex restaurants I go to here will refill you gratis.

Well post-riot London was VERY quiet last night and we had the Texas Embassy almost to ourselves. Very good it was though and the frozen Margaritas went down very well...
I agree about the chips and salsa, you shouldn't have to pay. But most Mexican restaurants here charge for your first round, so Texas Embassy is unusual in giving you them for free initially.

They are never free. Just like pizza delivery is never free. You are paying for it somewhere along the line. You just have to look at the total price for the total package.
Glad you had a fun birthday, Simon!

The usual assumption with the chips & salsa deal is that they're so salty that once you start munching on them, you'll order more drinks -- same philosophy as to why they put salty snacks (pretzels, nuts, potato chips) on a bar without charging you separately for them. Most restaurants see their profits from alcohol sale, which usually tends to have a high mark-up.

Simon, Here's hoping you end the Olympics with The Mother Of All Blow-Out Parties.
Cheers!

Have a great one! I'm guessing you won't be returning to the Texas Embassy this year.

Thank you everyone. I had a great day today on my birthday but will really celebrate it tomorrow when I go to Hyde Park in London for the Blur concert which is part of the Olympics closing ceremony. I understand there is a live link up with the closing ceremony at the Olympic stadium so you may get to see some of it in #failnbc.
