Took in the latest incarnation of this series last night. Of course this is the prequel, taking us back to the "beginnings".
Have to say, I loved this movie. It has a dark edge to it that the first three movies lacked, the characters and their relationships with each other start very differently than we are used to but move in the directions that we would expect, albeit not linearly.
First third is action packed, as is the last third. In between, the story gets bogged down in unnecessary details that could probably been left out or done very differently. Not the actors fault, there wasnt much to work with here. In the middle of this dead zone there is a five second cameo with Hugh Jackman in character as Wolverine, LOL funny, probably more so because of boredom on either side of it. After the Hugh Jackman cameo you have time for a comfortable drink/popcorn refills or a bathroom break before the action picks up again.
First third and last third make the movie shine however. Edge of the seat action with some very well played acting that gave it some serious drama. I am calling it the best of the series, Ann gives it second best status, she didnt care for them messing around with history. My feelings, we have no way of knowing that Xavier and Magneto were NOT crucial to the outcome of the Cuban missle crisis.
Kevin Bacon was the bad guy here, not his best effort. Another issue with the middle third of the movie, Mr Bacons character has a submarine, a real cheeseball sub more in character with an Austin Powers movie... really, who paints the interior of a submarine white?
Trailer of the day: We are going ape again this summer, remake of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. This time we are apparently going to be treated to CG apes. No idea if these are pure CG apes, or CG ala Gollum apes. Now if only someone could CG Roddy McDowell and Charlton Heston.
