A great summer movie. We saw it on IMAX last night and I was not disappointed. You can feel the Abrams and Spielberg influence from the very beginning.
It pays homage to ET, Close Encounters, and other classics. And there is a nice shout out to George Romero too. But you gotta stay for the credits to see it.
The kids in the movie steal the show. They are all no names but they are excellent.
I grew up shooting Super 8 and I have a couple of movies still around here somewhere from old film making classes. The movie brought back some excellent memories.
It is the perfect summer movie. And I am ready to even go back and see it a second time as I feel there were a bunch of details I missed because it was so fast paced.

Ummm, what was it about? The commercials give very few clues, except something to do with aliens. I'm not asking for spoilers, just what the general concept is? Funny, scary, serious, hard SF?

Judging from the Top Box Office listings, it appears this movie won the weekend at $37 million.

The commercials do give very little away. This was by design and at the direction of Abrams. It was a calculated choice by him. It is his Lost roots coming out. It is set in a small Ohio town. Strange things begin to happen as the result of a train crash. The core group of kids see the crash. The story pits the kids against the military with the townspeople being involved too. Definitely scary with a touch of sci fi. You can see Spielberg and ET all over it. And there is intentional humor involved too.

Thanks! That's the kind of details that I like to help me decide if I want to see a movie or not.
