First off, there is no ride at Disney for this movie to be based on. Secondly, abandon all POTC preconceptions at the ticket booth. Thirdly, buy some popcorn before entering the theater, because it is likely to be the highlight of the next 2 1/2 hours.
This is a dark movie, especially compared to the 3 preceding POIC's. In and of itself that would not be a bad thing, if only there were some element to grab onto to replace the fun and frivolity that was avoided this time around... a plot, please someone, give me a plot.
Depp is just this side of catatonic, no spark, going through the motions, Geoffrey Rush is barely the same Barbossa, the lifenand passion distilled out of him, Gibbs is back but much less talkative and more cynical, pretty much everyone else is AWOL, lucky SOB's. Penelope Cruz... sorry never cared for her. Special effects fall into the "we've seen it all before" and "put to much better effect before" categories.
One of the highlights, besides the popcorn, a cameo by Judi Dench, with a brief makeout scene with her and Depp... a great response from her after he leaves.
Go in with low expectations and you wont be disappointed. Think of this as akin to the Star Trek reboot, except this one doesnt work.

BTW- Oahu and the Big Island of Hawaii standing in for Florida?? Only visited Florida a few times, but I cannot say that I saw any similarities to with the terrain in the movie. AND stay for the easter egg at the end of the credits
