In the past week, Jim Leyland of Detroit and Joe Maddon of Tampa Bay, both managers, have called for ending interleague play.
They make some points on the key reason that interleague play was introduced, that was to develop more rivalries. For the most part, it seems to be true. You could make an argument for Yankees-Mets, White Sox-Cubs, and maybe Angels-Dodgers. But beyond that, I cant see that there are any real pairings that get the adrenaline going.
Joe maybe you could address whether Giants-Athletics or any pairing with any AL club is something you look forward to as a Giants fan.
Nola, Beeb, what do you guys think?
I cant think of any pairings with the Tigers and an NL club that I look forward to.
Is it time to dump the concept, schedule more divisional games, and leave interleague to the World Series?

I think its time has come and gone. The Yanks-Mets rivalry has always been there and always will be (unless the Mets move to Winnipeg); before inter-league play, the city used to hold The Mayor's Trophy game annually -- an exhibition game played for charity and the winning team would get the trophy from the Mayor's office for one year, until the following year's game was played. Basically, it was for bragging rights, but the teams used it to bring up minor leagues mid-season to see how they would do against major league hitting/pitching. I don't think there are too many rivalries that have developed as a result of inter-league play, so I wouldn't mind seeing it go and in so doing, return to an "unbalanced" schedule where you play more games with teams in your division, especially down the last month of the season (as it once was).

I like. It gives people in different cities a chance to see players they don't normally see.
As per Gordon's questions, we enjoy the Giants-A's series. We went Sunday to watch the A's at the Giants and we have traveled to Oakland to watch the Giants at the A's. I think it has even gotten bigger since the A's sweep the Giants in the 89 series.
We have gone to see the Angels, Ranger, Orioles, Red Soxs, when they come to town. We have tickets for the Twins next month and we also have the Indians coming to town. I get to see players play live that I don't normally get to see.
By the way Gordon the Giants will be in Detroit July 1 to 3 this year.
As long a Selig is commissioner I think interleague play we be sticking around.

No need for interleague play. I am happy to wait for the World Series to see the "other" league.
Get rid of the designated hitter too.
And bring back the double header.
And finally I prefer to take the bus.

Nola, you mention the DH, and I believe that it was Joe Maddon who was going the other way. I believe he said (and I dont know if its correct or not) that the NL is the only organization from Little League on up to MLB that does NOT use the DH.
As to the Giants in Detroit, I had not looked that far ahead in the schedule I will pencil it in for watching.
